http://www.madison.com/captimes/news/stories/67944.php In the wake of recent Republican attacks, veterans here today defended Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's role in opposing the Vietnam War some 30 years ago.
"I believe the Vietnam Veterans Against the War " - which Kerry was active in after returning from Vietnam - "and the (anti-war) movement in general brought us home," Will Gilmore of Madison said this morning at a meeting of veterans supporting Kerry.
"If it wasn't for them, how many more panels would there be?" he asked, referring to the list of names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Mike Taft of Osseo called Kerry's efforts to end the war "wonderful." Taft assailed President Bush for allegedly being AWOL while he was supposed to be serving in the National Guard during the same period, and accused Bush of being a "gangster" who is using the military now to further his own political ends.
