John Kerry and PA Treasurer Barbara Hafer on George Bush's Trip to PA

February 12, 2004
http://www.johnkerry.com/pressroom/releases/pr_2004_0212b.html
Washington, DC -

John Kerry and Pennsylvania State Treasurer Barbara Hafer issued the following statement today in response to President Bush's visit to Pennsylvania:

"The Bush Administration has said repeatedly that sending American jobs overseas is good for America and good for the economy," said Hafer. "President George Bush could not be more wrong. America has lost 3 million jobs under his watch - in Pennsylvania alone, more than 54,000 jobs have been lost. For him to come here today and talk about a strong economy and increased funding to job training is ludicrous. On a visit to Pittsburgh, George Bush said that he got the economy going by passing tax cuts to 'lay the foundation for greater prosperity and more jobs' but all we've seen here in Pennsylvania is continued devastation and doubletalk."
Barbara Hafer took office as Pennsylvania's 74th treasurer in January 1997, following eight years of public service as the state's auditor general. She was reelected treasurer in November 2000. Through her work in both offices, she has earned a reputation as a critic of government waste and advocate of fiscal openness and accountability.

Hafer changed her registration from the Republican Party to the Democratic Party in December 2003, and had endorsed Governor Edward G. Rendell in his 2002 race for governor against former state Attorney General Mike Fisher. She was an early support for John Kerry for President in Pennsylvania.

"George Bush has made 25 trips to Pennsylvania and he still can't tell Pennsylvanians why he favors sending a million jobs overseas," said John Kerry. "There's a real credibility gap here. I hope he can explain why he's cutting job training programs in his 2005 budget while touting these same programs in Pennsylvania today."

KEY FACTS ON PRESIDENT BUSH'S RECORD ON JOBS:

America has lost 2.8 million manufacturing jobs since President Bush took office.

"The first Bush tax break was supposed to create 800,000 additional jobs by the end of 2002. Instead, we lost 1.9 million jobs."

This latest round of tax breaks was supposed to create 510,000 additional
jobs by the end of 2003. But we
lost about 53,000 jobs in 2003.

Since the beginning of the Bush Administration, almost 3 million private-sector jobs have been lost. This is the worst economic record since the Hoover Administration. If jobs continue to be created at this rate, the Bush Administration will have the worst economic record since the Great Depression.

1. Pennsylvania is a blue state
For sure now. Hopefully we can add Ohio to that, but we need the nominee to spend a lot of time here. People are VERY ready to vote Dem here, just need to get exposure.

John Kerry Pittsburgh Fundraiser

In a recent fundraiser in Pittsburgh, John Kerry gave an eloquent and moving speech to 200 plus local Democratic supporters. In it, Senator Kerry touched on fixing the Bush-pillaged economy and the day-to-day needs of local governments in providing the basic services citizens expect and deserve of their government. Senator Kerry spoke of the vast underemployment not shown in the jobless numbers and the need to put America’s National Security Policies back on track to undo the damage done under the Bush administration. It was a very encouraging address to an enthusiastic crowd. Attendees included; Lt Governor Catherine Baker Knoll, Mayor of Pittsburgh Tom Murphy, several City and County councilpersons, and Steeler great Franco Harris.

RFK, Jr. Stumps for Kerry in Pittsburgh

On October 30th, the Allegheny County Democratic Committee welcomed the Kerry campaign and Robert Kennedy, Jr. to its annual Kennedy-Lawrence Dinner. Democrats lined up to meet Kennedy prior to the dinner as over thirty volunteers created a well-received Kerry buzz passing out literature and talking to their fellow Dems. Kennedy energized the crowd of over 600 party supporters by promoting John Kerry, advancing a more responsible environmental policy and denouncing the failed administration of George W. Bush. Kennedy also supported this year’s local and statewide candidates in their efforts to advance the Democratic Party. John Kerry was the only candidate represented.

The University of Pittsburgh Kerry College Democrats and Pittsburgh’s Meetup faithful helped to make the event a huge success for John Kerry. Look for Pennsylvania to continue to give great support to Senator Kerry.
