Obama says he was a bit nervous last night
Edited on Fri Apr-27-07 06:15 PM by rhombus
---Snip--- from today's townhall forum in Charleston, South Carolina.

Obama had stepped into the center ring of a high school gymnasium set for political theater in the round: Standing in a circle of a well-mixed crowd of whites and African-Americans seated on plastic chairs arranged on a blue vinyl mat covering the wooden floor of Burke High School's gym flanked by bleachers. Nearly 2,000 filled the gym, many lining up for over an hour under a baking mid-afternoon sun. Obama is drawing big crowds here. When he asked for questions or comment from the crowd Friday, this is the first comment he got: "Obama, Obama, you the man."

"I don't want all the questions to be that tough," joked Obama, allowing that he hadn't been in top form the night before in the premier presidential debate. "I was a little nervous, not so much because it was my first presidential debate, but because there was a 60-second time-limit on answers… My wife says it takes me 60 seconds to clear my throat."

How refreshing to hear a candidate say something honest like this! Personally, I think he did well. The expectations for Barack are I think off the charts. He'll only get better. The race is a marathon not a sprint. All the Dems yesterday did fairly well.

5. I agree with you
The expectations for him were extremely high. Everyone at work today, who actually saw the debate, thought he did very well. There were a couple of folks who said he didn't do well but they hadn't seen the debate. The power and influence of the pundits is frightening.

7. Thank God! Obama is actually Human
and experiences "emotion"! Take that Bush/Cheney!

Obama did just fine considering the media expectations (I think MSNBC was all Pre-debate chatter all day yesterday!) Those who believe that Obama disappointed either are buying into media's influence (since they like to build them up to then tear them down)!

9. I was disappointed in Obama last night.
I don't have cable so it's kind of hard for me to buy into the media's influence. And the media isn't the only ones who are raising expectations.Have you seen his supporters? After all the talk of how inspiring he is I have to say that I find him as inspiring, and as safe,as milk.I'm glad he inspires others, but he hasn't come close to connecting with me yet.

Those who think anyone who was disappointed was some kind of dupe are buying into the cult of personality influence.

See,that specious argument can go both ways. ;)

I am kind of worried though...I don't like Hillary so I'm a women hater. What does not liking Obama make me? :scared:

10. I like Obama a lot
but politically, it's not wise to say you're nervous over a debate. I think people want a sense of confidence in their President.

12. He made a joke...
...I was there today. Obama made a joke about the format of the debates...And yet some want to take it and run with it without knowing a darn thing about the context in which it was made. He was fabulous today and the remark got a great roar of laughter. Maybe you should go SEE him in person before you try to judge??

14. I said
I like him a lot, but I stand by the notion that a presidential candidate shouldn't ever say they're nervous, even if they are.

Geez, you can't ever say ANYTHING about any candidate here without somebody getting defensive.

15. Maybe if you actually heard the context in which it was said...
...you would have thought differently, got a good laugh out of if, and may not have judged it in the same way. I'm just sayin'
