The winning issue in 2004
Straight from the mouth of a conservative former Bush voter. Addressed to Dean, but we all know who the real fair trade standard bearer in this campaign is, don't we? ;-)

http://sierratimes.com/03/12/29/ar_carlworden.htm

I am a Christian conservative who voted for Bush in 2000, and I write for a largely conservative and excellent Internet news and opinion publication called The Sierra Times. Remarkably, the positive responses I received from that article ran 8 to 2, 2 being those who said I was dead, absolutely DEAD wrong. The fact that largely conservative readers responded as positively as they did, means I am not wrong, and I am sticking to my prediction that Howard Dean will be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States.

The issue that I believe will put Dean right over the top will be his condemnation of NAFTA/GATT, free trade, and his pledge to end our participation in the World Trade Organization. If Dean wants to win by a comfortable margin, all he has to do is THAT. The massive number of red states that voted for Bush last election will turn to blue, and Dean will waltz into the White House like a halfback who strolls untouched into the end zone. End of game.

Of course, I have no idea what Dean’s position is on free trade, NAFTA/GATT or the WTO. As far as I know, he hasn’t said. Maybe he’s saving that for the finishing shot. I’m speculating of course, but Mr. Dean, if you are reading this, I just gave you the keys to the White House.

7. Winning issues: Jobs, healthcare, deficits, Iraq, pork, graft, privacy
Dean's record puts him in a far better position to take on Bush than Kerry on all seven.

Losing issues: patriotism, electability, guns, safety.

Kerry's best issues are all losing issues. He's going to lose big. Why, oh, why have Democrats trusted the same media that hyped Bush and his "popular war" up to a 75% approval rating to pick our "acceptable" losing candidate for us? Who made Kerry's supposed ELECTABILITY the big issue, and on what basis did the media make this false determination?

8. If Democrats won't run against "free trade" a third party will
Edited on Fri Feb-13-04 11:56 PM by WhoCountsTheVotes
Will a third party take more votes from Bush or Kerry? Because if the Democrats nominate a pro-corporate "free trade" candidate, a third party will run and take a whole lot of votes. Remember Perot got 20% - one in five.

9. If there were a Perot-like candidate in 2004...

... and Kerry is the nominee, I would probably vote for him. The "Washington Consensus" on corporate globalization has to be broken, someone has to come forward and represent the people. :(

11. Why has Kerry attacked Dean for being a "protectionist" then?
Edited on Sat Feb-14-04 12:40 AM by stickdog
If you think Dean's so bad on trade, what do you think of the candidates who accuse him of protectionism?

Because one is about to named the Dem nominee unless we do something about it quickly.
