WALTHAM -
Governor’s Councilor Marilyn Devaney, upset that a beauty supply shop wouldn’t take her check, allegedly hurled a curling iron at a clerk.
Devaney — who advises the governor on judges and serves as an At-Large Councilor in Watertown — allegedly grew agitated on April 13 when Adriana Latif, a clerk at Sally Beauty Supply in Waltham, insisted she show a drivers license in order to accept a check.

Latif said Devaney attempted to use her authority in order to bypass the identification requirement, and “threw a fit” after not getting her way.

The officer alleged Devaney “felt the need” to use her authority in attempts to get out of a $135 ticket, but Devaney said the officer fueled her with “push” questions to intimidate her.
In March 2006, after a crash on the Interstate 93 off-ramp near Storrow Drive, she was cited for reportedly driving an unregistered vehicle without a valid inspection sticker. Devaney claims her car was registered, but that she mistakenly gave the trooper expired information.

Devaney accused of throwing curling iron at beauty store clerk

H2otown has been hearing the whispers of Unregistered Pipsqueaks about a nutty incident involving At Large Councillor Marilyn Devaney throwing a curling iron at a clerk at a local beauty supply store after the clerk refused to allow her to write a check without ID. Now the story can be told, by the TAB, natch:
Myesha Vanover, another clerk at Sally Beauty Supply, said she was also questioned by Devaney about the purchase, and was taken to the window to see the Governor’s Councilor plates on the back of her 2004 blue PT Cruiser.
“You need a license, that’s how it is,” said Vanover to the TAB & Press. “There’s nothing we can do about it.”
Latif said Devaney then took the bag with the curling iron and threw it in her direction saying, “Here, you can have it.” The bag allegedly hit Latif’s chest and landed on the counter.
This latest alleged incident follows on the heels of a 2006 incident where Devaney was found to be driving an unregistered and uninspected vehicle, a 2007 incident where she was pulled over while driving an unregistered vehicle with an expired license, and now this incident. This doesn't count the councillor's ongoing battles with the trustees of the Watertown Free Public Library, the Town Manager, and the chief of police.
H2otown's question: Was Councillor Devaney, who's been on the town council for 20+ years, always this combative, or does this streak of run-ins and battles represent an accelerating phenomenon?
