Fletcher (R-KY) faces past scandal, primary challenge in re-election bid
By ROGER ALFORD
Associated Press Writer

FRANKFORT, Ky. --

<snip>

His next objective, winning a second term in Kentucky's top office, could perhaps be his toughest. To achieve it, Fletcher will have to get through the turbulence of a troublesome political scandal that has dogged him for the past two years.

The governor was indicted last year on charges that he illegally rewarded political supporters with protected state jobs after he took office in 2003. The indictment was dismissed nearly a year ago in a deal with prosecutors, but a special grand jury later issued its findings in the case, saying Fletcher had approved a "widespread and coordinated plan" to skirt state hiring laws.

In the aftermath, two Republicans filed to run against Fletcher for the Republican nomination in the May 22 primary election. If Fletcher wins, he will face one of seven Democrats vying for the job.

Fletcher was ordained and served as a pastor at a Primitive Baptist church in Lexington from 1989 to 1994. Fletcher isn't shy about his faith and his responsibilities as a Christian.
