Not for our fine friends on FreeRepublic, apparently. And not for Matt Drudge.

See link

Jerks.

Human nature, I guess.

3. Jerks is right...
"To: Anti-Bubba182
“Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated.”

Someone needs to ask him how happy he is today."

Imagine this - if even two students were carrying guns when this occurred, how many more would have been killed? Who is to say that it could have been stopped - a campus full of students locked and loaded is not my idea of higher education. It is a tragedy, that simple.

4. The Whitehouse, too...
From Here:

Dana Perino, a White House spokeswoman, said President Bush was horrified by the rampage and offered his prayers to the victims and the people of Virginia.

“The president believes that there is a right for people to bear arms, but that all laws must be followed,” Perino said.

As many as 31 people are confirmed dead in this thing, and the Whitehouse is responding with a defense of gun ownership? Sounds like a Conservative Idiot of the Week candidate to me.

5. Wow! I've had my head under a rock! I can't believe that!
Give everybody guns? Give a bunch of immature college students, many of whom binge drink on the weekends, guns? The answer is to give everybody guns? These people are crazier than I thought and I thought they were pretty deranged.

8. It's strange to me
how two people can look at a single event and draw completely different conclusions. I look at this and think, "Gee, we need to do something about gun control." They look at it and say, "Gee, everybody needs a gun."

The thing that I think they are missing and would probably refuse to see, is that while this kid on this campus killed 30+ people today, how many kids on all the campuses in the country would be killed every year if concealed weapons were common on college campuses?

10. I'll be honest with you. I am a college prof and today I wish I were carrying a concealed firearm

universities are very vulnerable to this sort of tragedy because of some people's desire to make campuses gun-free zones. The only problem is that criminals or would-be criminals don't care about gun-free zones.

If a student went on a rampage, all I would have to defend myself is a the knife in my desk that I refer to as a letter opener whenever someone sees it.

12. It's certainly a valid thing to be feeling today.
But will you be feeling the same way tomorrow? Next week? Next month?

Whatever way you feel about the 2nd ammendment, guns are a serious business, as they are quite literally instruments of death. It would be irresponsible to pass sweeping legislature one way or the other based off of a few scattered incidents, and that goes for liberals as well.

13. I have thought about the need to carry a concealed firearm from time to time.

The small southern city I live in is a very mixed area and we get all types at my little college. 99.9% are great people even if they are not great students. I fail students all the time. Sometimes by failing them, they lose their scholarships and I am, in effect, kicking them out of college. Sometimes my students are angry and they vent on me. Luckily I am a big guy so I can deescalate most situations, but it wouldn't surprise me if some of the angry students had guns tucked into their waste bands under their shirts.

So yes, I've thought about it and I usually just whistle in the dark.

11. How about a third alternative
How does somebody reach the reasonable conclusion that such an act will solve all his problems? (That goes for the "her's" too).

Maybe that's what needs looking into.

14. Great Opportunity For NBC
What a Lucky break for the kindly folks at NBC.
They would have been forced to continue with their coverage of "what blacks can say to blacks in the company of blacks or others" routine, which I'm sure they dreaded but now will be more than happy to drop that angle and analyze the crap out of this latest news.
Ah well, one major war critic gone and poof ... like that we will forget why.
