Webb Blasts McCain; Accuses Fellow Vet Of "Impugning People's Patriotism"
By Greg Sargent | bio

Bloomberg News reports:

April 13 (Bloomberg) -- Democratic Senator James Webb accused Republican John McCain of questioning the patriotism of those who disagree with him on Iraq and "hiding behind the troops as political justification" for a misguided policy.

"I think that John McCain has been impugning people's patriotism and I really regret that he is doing that," Webb, of Virginia, said on Bloomberg Television's "Political Capital with Al Hunt," scheduled to air today. "I'm very disappointed in him."

Webb appears to be reacting to some remarks McCain made during his big Iraq speech, in which he opined that "in Iraq, only our enemies were cheering" when the House Dems passed their Iraq supplemental bill mandating withdrawal.

Even better, Webb goes on to accuse McCain of breaking a personal appeal he says McCain made to him some time ago:

In the television interview, Webb said McCain had approached him on the Senate floor and said lawmakers should avoid the type of personal attacks that occurred during congressional debates about the Vietnam War 30 years ago.

Since that conversation, Webb said McCain has been "consistently" attacking those who disagree with him about the war.

"I don't believe it is in anybody's interest for members of the Senate to be impugning the other side's patriotism or, by the way, hiding behind the troops as political justification for what we are doing," said Webb, a former U.S. Marine.

Leave it to Webb. It'll be interesting to see how the McCain camp handles this one.

4. McLame is a pandering fool.
If he had any grey cells functioning he would retire. His ego has overloaded any logic that he may have had.

6. McCain sold his soul when he left Kerry out to dry in 2004
McCain has said that without the support John Kerry there was no way that he would've been able to recover from his experiences in Vietnam. For someone that he claims to owe so much to, should have told Bush to have Rove get the Swift Boat ads pulled or he would not endorse him and not speak at the convention.

McCain served his country honorably and I have to admire that, especially given the fact that the sheer thought of the Hanoi Hilton would've made me pull every stop possible to dodge the draft had I been alive back then. But his service doesn't qualify him to be president.

7. And last October when he pretended to be offended by Kerry's botched joke!
He knew damn well that Kerry did not mean to offend the soldiers, yet, here McCain came, near tears, lamenting Kerry's 'insulting those fine men and women...'.

That was the absolute bottom, IMO.

8. Go Sen. Webb!
Dear gawd, it's nice to have vets on our side. And when they're as articulate & smart & willing to call a hypocrite a hypocrite it's twice as nice.

11. Yes I know. But don't you think it's great that we have
congress critter vets? I think it gives more credence when vets criticize the war. I'm probably not explaining this very well.

12. That's my Senator! Webb (D-VA)

He's everything we thought he'd be. He ran a tough campaign, fired back a nuke for every grenade
Allen threw and laid it out for everyone to see. The Corporate Media called him a Southern
Conservative. Apparently they failed to read anything he said in the campaign.

He's 100% populist, liberal Democrat. He's not using those words yet but listen to his response to
el presidente's State of the Union. Amazing.

He's not afraid of sacred cows because he's a citizen serving his country and he knows that's a
pretty important title ina addition to his verious achievements and honors.

He's a guy who won with small contributions, $200 or less against all the big money stacked on
Allen's number.

He's a key player in the generation of Democrats primarily who have to save this country.
