Edwards "walks in the shoes of an SEIU member": Story, photos, and video
Presidential Candidate John Edwards Walks In the Shoes of an SEIU Member
Wednesday, April 11, 2007

As the first presidential candidate to take time off from campaigning to “walk a day in the shoes” of an SEIU member and to see what life is really like for working Americans, Sen. John Edwards yesterday experienced the world through the eyes (and treads) of nursing home worker Elaine Ellis.

After an early breakfast at Ellis’ home in New Rochelle, NY, Edwards and Ellis began the day at her usual 6:30 am with rounds at the nursing home where she has worked for more than 18 years.

As part of SEIU’s program to ensure that presidential candidates experience firsthand what life is like for working people in America, yesterday Sen. John Edwards walked a day in the shoes of SEIU member Elaine Ellis. His time with her began with an early morning breakfast and continued with rounds at the nursing home where Ellis works.

Elaine Ellis: “Every day I bathe, dress, feed and care for nine patients before many people are awake. Now that he’s cared for patients with me, I think Senator Edwards has a better understanding of what it’s like to work in a nursing home. I also think he has a deeper appreciation for what people like me go through to give our families a future.”

1. This is a wonderful story.
When Al Gore first came to national attention, I didn't think much of him. That changed.

So it is with Edwards. He's really growing on me. He really is.

4. And yet the union leadership is backing Clinton.
Union endorsements should be put to a popular vote of the membership. I hear that the SEIU leadership is backing Clinton so she will probably get the endorsement.

9. OK, now I'm getting a little teary eyed here...
Compassion and kindness and integrity is what this entire country desperately needs.

Edwards and/or Gore. 'Nuff Said.

10. Edwards is a man of the people!
As he often says, his brother is a Union electrician and his parents were Union, in fact, they have healthcare thanks to the Unions. Edwards understands the issues that the working class face, like no other candidate!
