The Reverend Al
Since I keep hearing his name and seeing his offended face, I got to wondering ...
What ever became of the good "Reverend"s financial snafoos involving our tax dollars from the last run around the park? Remember these stories ..

4. Rev. Al IS a race-baiting charlatan. And Jesse Jackson called NYC "Hymietown."
You know, the head of New Jersey NOW is a black woman, god forbid the networks interview her about this incident.

Oh, wait a minute. The entire "white community" is not held responsible for the actions of individual white people. That collective blame is only reserved for black people.

14. Imus has been made a scapegoat. His words were wrong and stupid
but he never meant them to be racist or sexist. An apologize should have been enough along with fair warning and the suspension.
Sharpton was out for to create outrage to promote himself and raise money.
No one condones Imus' words, even Imus, but he didn't deserve to be made the scapegoat for all that is wrong with society today especially by a man like Sharpton.
Frankly, I hope he is exposed soon. The Black community needs a real honest leader like MLK. Sharpton is none of these things.

18. LOL! here's how I analyze the position on the perceived "double standard"
I think the Sharpton attackers and Imus defenders are LESS upset about Sharpton and MORE upset that Imus is not free to make racist remarks without consequences.

I think Sharpton is frankly a smokescreen for the lament that white racists aren't "free" enough to spount hate speech.

Since Sharpton was not attacked until yesterday, it was not a priorty for you.

see?

Let's just be honest, here. People are upset that there are direct consequences for racist language and hatespeech.

In other words, If Imus had no consequences, we would not be having this conversation about Sharpton.

I have listened to IMUS a grand total of once in my life (@2004) and personly wish the entire genere of "talk" radio would just go away ... hate radio serves no good use ...poof, be gone ...
enough about IMUS.
This thread is about Reverend Al (doesnt he do talk radio also?).
Before we are expected to grasp him as a spokesperson for our progressive community wouldnt it be wise to take a closer look? He keeps moving us onward? ... where, to 1965? What dont I get here? I see nothing but a see through phony right down to the need to wrap his message in some tax dodge title. Please!

Here is a point to ponder ...
College sports ... why bother? People (other than the Reverand Al) took the IMUS comments as a slap on women via a slap on womens sports ... in college?
Here's an idea.
Since colleges are now required to fund womens sports at a level equal to lucrative mens sports what is the net result?
Higher tuitions for one and all?
Plug in that math next time you cut your student loan check.
Ever wonder during March madness why all those kids arent studying their calculus like the rest of the overcharged student body?
Why not teach them something actualy useful while they are in school? If I hear another qute about "tommorows leaders" I will barf. :)

Take a good look at the WHITE communities leaders.
ie. the little dope in the whitehouse. The repukes had to disqualify a whole lot of black votes for that to happen.

uh - bullshit. Did you even read the transcript? The whole segment was racist and sexist, mean spirited and hateful. Have you listened to the Imus show? Racism, sexism, and homophobia are built in - scripted in - as regular parts of the show. This was not a one time occurence, not a slip of the tongue, not a mistake. It was racist, it was hateful, it was vile and demeaning to those young women and it was fully intentional.

44. There is in this context.
Their counter offensive is to attack other people as 'just as bad as Imus', claim hypocrisy, and portray Imus as a victim. It isn't a bad strategy, plus they can count on idiots on our side to find some merit in their bullshit and carry their water for them by propagating bits and pieces of their nonsense with the best of intentions.

I disagree with Sharpton on many issues, but Al's problems are not the issue here, they are a diversion.

I'll take a crack at it.
Some people, myself included, find it helpful when evaluating a message's merit, to KNOW who the messenger is. That knowledge helps paint an overall context to how one should react to the message.
Obviously you havent found this helpful for some time.
I am reminded of the tale about the boy who cried wolf once to often ... but that was just fiction.

Saying you didn't want Imus fired isn't really "right wing" either. I'm just tired of people who disagree with the issue du jour being attacked as "right wing". Democrats don't hold the same opinion about everything, and disagree with liberals doesn't make you "right wing".

31. I do remember one thing from the last presidential debates:
Sharpton was the only one dealing with the real issues that would make a difference for Americans, not to mention that he was one of the few that sounded like an old fashioned honest to goodness Dem.
I also thought he sounded like he was one of the more intelligent dem candidates. But like everyone, he doesn't by any means represent all my beliefs. Having said all that, I don't think he is, more than anyone else, immune to hypocrisy or self serving behavior.

I did see him on Today show this morning and he said one thing that bothered me. He said the FCC should ban the "n" word and several other racist words as well as banning the word "ho."

As disgusting as I find that language I am generally uncomfortable with government messing with what can be said over the airwaves (including the fact that I think I should be able to watch Jon Stewart without having him bleeped) and if I want to watch sexually provocative programming I think I should be able to do so.

As far as Imus, from what I can gather (and I wouldn't know since I have never listened to him) he has been generally offensive since first being on the air and while I may have a problem with the government telling him what he can say I have no problem with a network firing him because they don't feel he is suitable for them. I also don't have a problem with boycotting sponsors and sponsors pulling ads because he was found to be offensive.

30. I find the ad hominem attacks on Rev. Sharpton to be offensive
When someone takes a stand on an issue--in this case, sexist, racist comments that are a pattern of bigotry occurring over many years--it is appropriate that people who have alternative views or question the facts speak up about them. It is NOT appropriate that they attack the "messenger". The merits of Rev. Sharpton's arguments are what should be the focus and these have nothing to do with his own perceived charateristics or misdeeds, as there is ample evidence about the arguments themselves to evaluate them.

Rev. Sharpton also is not responsible for, nor powerful enough to stop, the misdeeds of all of the other racists and sexists and other bigots in the world, as some others such as Meredith Viera seem to want to imply. The fact that he has chosen his battles and may have even fought some of the battles others want fought but lost due to a lack of power, is not a sign of hypocrisy and has nothing to do with the present mess that Don Imus put HIMSELF in. It is pretty outrageous to me that some of us are saying to him that, if he has not solved every problem, then how dare he try to be part of the solution to any problem.

When people attack the messenger, I have to look for the motive behind it, and I don't like what I see.

I don't agree with many things Reverend Al says, but I have NO DOUBT that he is standing up for ALL PEOPLE'S civil rights.

Just because Imus revealed an ugly TRUISM that sexism and racism are alive and well in the USA, you are shamelessly attempting to change the topic to an African American Spokesman. How immature but it speaks volumes of the people here. :(

Watch out folks, your sexist and racist slips are showing in so many covert ways. If you only knew, you'd blush with embarrassment at all your various "tells."
