The C.B.C. Stands By Fox
By Kate Phillips
Despite the fact that the three top contenders (at this point) for the Democratic nomination say they won’t take part in a September debate in Detroit sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus Institute and Fox News, the C.B.C. released a statement tonight announcing that it stands by its plan.
Regarding media stories or inquiries about the broadcasting of these events, the C.B.C. Institute has secured agreements with CNN and FOX News to nationally telecast the debates. Each network will telecast one debate for Democrats and one for Republicans, and we are proceeding with these agreements.
As a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization, the C.B.C. Institute is holding the debates to help educate African-Americans and others on key issues of national policy. As with our previously sponsored debates, the C.B.C. Institute will determine the format and select the panelists for the debates.
The debates will be a unique and rare opportunity for the candidates to present their message and ideas to millions of voters in a manner that is unfiltered by any political or news organization. We have extended invitations to all presidential candidates to participate, and we are hopeful that they will accept our invitation.
Well, at this juncture, it seems a bit unlikely that John Edwards, the former North Carolina senator who was the first to decline because Fox was involved, or Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton will reverse their decisions. (Never mind that their debate schedules are getting more and more crowded as states and major cities clamor to hold their own in this accelerated campaign season.)
