Sorry...I'm Voting For Mario Cuomo
I'm watching a replay on CSPAN this morning of a "debate" between Mario Cuomo and Newt "the Ging.

Other than suggesting that Newt run for President, Mr. Cuomo has inspired me once again. I can think of no one who represents the Democratic Party (and my own personal feelings) more than this great American. He articulates the Democratic position better than anyone else I can think of.

Dang...I wish this man would run for President.

2. He never could pull the trigger on that one
After his 1984 keynote speech he was the favorite heading into 1988. I think he opted for personal sanity in the end.

8. I heard that speech while I was driving. Absolutely riveting!
He was brilliant! Sounds like he hasn't lost his touch. MAN, wouldn't it be great if the next president were to choose him for the Supreme Court? HE should be chief justice.

10. So....
How would one go about trying to encourage Mario to run...? Being as early as it is, who knows.

13. We need to generate support for him on the netroots first
Once we show him there is some support for him, chiefly through an online petition, we could possibly get him to join the race. We need Mario Cuomo's leadership, vision, and ability to articulate progressive values in this race. He is our best opportunity to win the ideological battle against conservatism.

11. Can any Dem match this? Mario on what it is to be a Democrat

The applause has been edited out. I can't think of a better articulation of Democratic principles in three minutes. We need leaders like Governor Cuomo who are not ashamed to be Democrats and do not hide beyond poll-tested, focus-grouped generalities that work at the given moment. We need leaders with principles who are not afraid to articulate their beliefs to the people.

Here is another brief clip of Mario Cuomo pointing out the pain of those who are left out under conservative social Darwinism. How many Democrats today are this direct in criticizing W? http://www.theartofrwfirestone.com/tempcuomo/MC84%20Reagan's%20Shining%20City.mp3

The Republicans are not ashamed of their beliefs. They don't practice much of it but they articulate it every four years. They have a clear message. Democrats need to join this one-sided ideological fight in which the Democratic Party is largely AWOL. Words such as "hope" and "leadership" sound good but are meaningless without a vision for America. Elections should be about ideas--not about who is best able to do what is politically expedient at a given moment.

14. In 1984, Cuomo and Hart were the stars of the party.
In 1984, Cuomo and Hart were the stars of the party. Cuomo gave the inspiring keynote speech about what it meant to be a Democrat. Hart was the man with the new ideas to reorganize the party and attract new party members and gain the political support of independent voters and crossover Republicans. Cuomo was the soul of the party and Hart was the brain. Sadly, we got neither. In 1988 we had the bungling Dukakis, and in 1992 we got corporatist DLC Clinton. In terms of its hold on Congress, the party has been in decline since Clinton’s election. The recent regain of both houses of Congress is by the most tenuous of margins.

I sincerely hope that anyone who feels that a qualified candidate is not in the running should go out an urge that candidate to run.

But please, don’t feed the current weak field. I can’t take another four years of this.

15. I love Cuomo
I wish he'd have taken a Supreme Court seat in the 90s.

Alas, he's 75 years old now - too old to run for Prez OR get appointed to the SC.
