Why no criticism of Repubs in Syria?

U.S. Congressman Darrell Issa meets Syrian president in Damascus
The Associated Press Published: April 5, 2007

DAMASCUS, Syria: A visiting U.S. congressman held talks with President Bashar Assad Thursday, a day after a congressional delegation headed by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sparked controversy by meeting the Syrian leader.

U.S. President George W. Bush has rejected direct talks with Damascus and criticized Pelosi for her visit.

Commenting on Bush's criticism, California Republican Darrell Issa said the president had failed to promote the necessary dialogue to resolve disagreements between the U.S. and Syria.

Bush sharply criticized Pelosi for leading the delegation to meet Assad, a move he said was counterproductive because it eased the country's isolation. The White House, however, stayed relatively quiet about a similar trip just a few days earlier by a three-man Republican delegation.

Pelosi's visit followed one by three congressmen from Bush's own party who also met with Syria's leaders.

10. True to a certain degree. Who the hell is Darrell Issa?
Sen. Nelson of FL also visited recently and no one raised a peep. I think the hoopla stems from the fact that she's the House Speaker and well known.

4. Partisan hackery
requires using only part of the story. No point in showing all the facts if it discredits the argument.

7. It's the ganster mentality.
In Godfather, Sonny was killed because Pacino's character spoke up at a conference. The other crime family killed Sonny so that the proper son would be heir to the family.

Truly democratic people think the ability to discuss problems openly is a sign of strength.

Authoritarians think open discussion of differences is a sign of weakness. Pelosi's election undermined Bush's power. Anything she does will be couched in a "she's undermining our efforts" paradigm.

Hopefully, she can undermine him enough to save the American people from him and his cronies.
