Hillary Clinton accepts invitation to speak at Charleston NAACP banquet
Wednesday, April 04, 2007

Charleston's NAACP branch asked Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama both to serve as the keynote speaker for its main fundraising banquet on Sept. 15, and the group announced Wednesday that Clinton's camp committed first and she will get the slot.

"They really both wanted to be here, but they did not want to commit too early," branch president Dot Scott said. "We kept pressuring and kept pressuring to get it planned. Senator Clinton's helpers might have been a little bit more savvy and they came in and confirmed that she will be there."

Scott said the keynote speaker position shouldn't be construed as an endorsement by the Charleston branch, which had another Democratic presidential hopeful. Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware delivered the keynote speech last year.

1. That's a strange way to pick a keynote speaker...
invite two and whoever answers first gets the slot?

2. It's very tricky to get a speaker
pols are loathe to commit early on and yet groups need the details for their events. A smart group does not extend one invitation and hope to gawd that person shows. That's a sure way to be in panic mode at the last minute with no speaker scheduled and the event upon you.
