snip//
As Dr. King would say, "Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity."
If not for the patient determination of one man, MLK Jr. Day would not exist at all. Less than a week after the murder of Dr. King, Rep. John Conyers of Michigan introduced legislation calling for a federal holiday to commemorate the life and lessons of Dr. King.
And he did so every session for the next 15 years — until it passed. What determination. What dedication. He never gave up, never relented, never backed down on what he knew was our duty as Americans; even disunited Americans.
The nation is lucky to have Rep. Conyers: Lucky and about to get luckier.
But not our attorney general. When it comes to Conyers, Gonzales is not so lucky.
You see, Conyers, first elected to Congress by the voters of the Detroit area in 1964 — the same year that Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize — chairs the House judiciary committee.
And even though the president and the staff at the White House have stood behind the attorney general when it comes to firing those federal prosecutors this past year, Conyers is determined. The president told Conyers and the committee that they could chat with the staff at the AG’s office but that no one will speak under oath. If they have to promise that what they say is the truth, then they refuse to testify.
Want to know what Conyers said? Conyers cautioned the Bush administration. "The old days of the previous congresses are over, Mr. President," Conyers said. "And so we’ll get to the bottom of this crisis with or without cooperation."
