Pelosi, while in Syria, encourages Syrian President to negotiate release of 15 sailors

While in Syria this Tuesday and Wednesday House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met with Syrian President Bashar Al Assad, encouraging him to step into the diplomatic void and use his good standing to seek the release of 15 British sailors held by Iran. Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem spoke to British PM Tony Blair on the phone Wedenesday, seeking to bring an end to the crisis.

Last Wednesday at the Arab summit conference in Saudi Arabia, Syrian president Bashar Al Assad spoke with the Iranian foreign minister Manuchehr Mottaki about the 15 British sailors.

Syrian President Bashar Al Assad:

"This solution needs quiet diplomacy and Syria is now undertaking such quiet diplomacy between the two countries.

"We hope for a satisfactory solution that will lead to resolving the crisis of the British service personnel held captive in Iran."

GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney assailed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday:

``It's a very bad idea to be carrying out a separate and independent foreign policy from the president of the United States,'' Romney added. ``I just don't know what got into her head, to be completely honest with you. I think it was a huge, huge mistake.''

Families of the 15 sailors have not yet commented on Mr. Romney's statement.

House Speaker Nanacy Pelosi then flew to Saudi Arabia to meet with King Abdullah.

Beaking news:
Crude Oil Drops on Release of U.K. Sailors

At last check, the May crude oil futures contract was down 63 cents, or 0.97 percent at $64.01 per barrel after tagging an intraday low of $63.08. On Tuesday, the price of crude shed two percent as traders began to unwind the risk premium built into prices during the crisis.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, Iranian Diplomat Seized In Iraq Returns Home

An Iranian diplomat detained in Iraq for the last two months has been released, returning Tuesday to Iran. Jalal Sharafi, who was the second secretary of Iran's Embassy in Iraq, was abducted in Baghdad on Feb. 4.

15. Hannity: "Pelosi should be ashamed for sucking up to terrorists"

And his callers saying: "We should get a refund for her trip"...."After the sailors are safely home we should lob a few bombs into Iran, show them we aren't going to take this..."

There is no hope for these people.

36. Hannity was on in the office today. He and his callers were totally disgusting
After hearing some of the right wing reaction today, I'm convinced more than ever that the conservative movement needs to be defeated, destroyed and made obsolete by any means necessary. These aren't regular conservative Republicans. This is a sick, perverse ideology. I'm hoping that the regular conservatives see the light soon and abandon the sick philosophy that the modern right wing movement has become.

26. I can almost see their point
It's not necessarily in our best interest for Congress, particularly Congressional Democrats, to act or be seen to act as a separate power bloc; some countries would be delighted to play both ends against the middle.

Then again, diplomacy is sometimes about getting more opinions rather than limiting them. The situation needed an ameliorative voice, and I love the Speaker's initiative.

Pelosi told the WH she was going and got the WH blessing.

He was educated in Britain, studied opthamology; because of his older brother's untimely death, he was forced into politics. He looks like a former prosecutor I used to work for.

31. IMHO opinion
No one in the mid east wants Bush to attack Iran, and that means taking the diplomatic initiative. Now that everyone is talking, it remains to be seen if Bush attacks Iran. I say no attack.

38. Iran knows how to play this game
They have had first-hand experience, and they remembered the instruction manual.

They did it to Jimmy Carter by making a deal with Reagan's agents to free the
U.S. embassy hostages as soon as Reagan took office.

They did it again with the 15 British sailors. This time, they made
Bush look bad (not the most difficult of tasks, especially with Bush's
bashing Pelosi in public merely making the Iranians' job that much easier).

I respect Speaker Pelosi's efforts and concerns in making this trip, but is this claim anywhere besides Roger's blog? I will shout it from the mountain tops if I can find a news link reporting it, but otherwise I don't like it when we make claims we can't back up.

42. Not doubting you..
nor inferring anything. I simply would like to bring this up to some folks I work with - we have some great political discussions and debates here - but in those discussions, I don't make claims for which I can only use a Blogger or an Editorial (the other article) as a reference. I shouldn't have made my post sound as if I was acusing you of making a claim you could not back up. That ain't what I meant.
