Big Supporter for Mitt and his magic undies
I admire my ex-governor's unscrupilous ambition for the presidency. His fund-raising prowess is far above his rivals. The 23 million raised will definately bolster his ability to spend on bilingual tv ads.

I am hoping for Mitt to win the GOP nom. It will ensure a landslide victory for the Democrat!!! Who's with me?

3. He's a Mormon.
They wear sacred garments under their regular clothes. Sometimes they are referred to, irreverently, as magic underwear.

6. Yeah, but some religious practices lend themselves to ridicule . . .
more readily than others.

9. A Little Different, I Think
I was taught back in the day, at my orthodox shul, that yarmulkes are worn as a sign of respect for the Creator.

My understanding is that Mormon 'garments' are to ward off evil.

However, the point is well taken that we should be nice to each other's untestable beliefs.

16. You can't have any
unless you are a Mormon. They won't sell them to you.

They don't sell them on e-bay, and it is hard to find a picture of them on the Internets. I did find a picture once.

Every time I am tempted to ridicule them, I think of all the things about my faith that can be ridiculed.

I can think of many other reasons to ridicule Mitt and not vote for him. I don't really care about his underwear.

5. All the 'Licans look imminently beatable this time round . . .
McCain -- gone already after the "market walk"
Romney -- charming but clueless (and a verrrrry weak resume) and a painfully obvious hypocrite to boot!
Giuliani -- creepy and offputting with more baggage than the cast of Cirque de Soleil
Gingrich -- damaged goods and too far behind in the money stakes
Rest of the 'Licans -- not even in the rear-view mirror . . .

I do think it'll be Romney, and he'll get pasted by Hill, Obama, Edwards, whoever.

Don't fall for the hype. We still need to work our donkeys off between now and November, 2008.

24. As I recall, Bush/Cheney *did* lose that election . . .
Despite a less-than-stellar campaign by Gore and near-universal piling on from the media.

We're still vulnerable to election fraud, and you're right -- we'll need to win this one by several points to overcome 'Lican shenanigans and vote-suppression schemes.

However, those schemes are much harder to pull off than they were in 2000 and 2004.

All I'm saying is that while Bush was something of a cipher ("Compassionate Conservative" anyone?), the 'Licans this time are profoundly and dramatically unsuited for office and are all tarred with the Bushite brush. In that sense, they are imminently beatable.

27. They lost both elections.
But that's a large part of why we can't get complacent and toss around irresponsible terms like "imminently beatable."

30. DO-I-SOUND-COMPLACENT!!!!!!!!
Naaah, not hardly.

However, I am noting that the 'Lican presidential crop really sucks and has lost the protective coloration that Bush used to fool those voters who did legitimately vote for him.

We got out-politikked in 2000 (as well as defrauded) and out-politikked in 2004 (as well as defrauded). However, the 'Lican machine that succeeded in those elections is now in disarray, the monolithic base on the far right is cranky and fractious, the centrists who didn't want to joggle the C-in-C's elbow in 2004 have seen how big a mistake *that* was, and the 'Lican national candidates are freaks.

Sure we could get cornholed again, but I don't see anything remotely like complacency among the political junkies (the only ones paying much attention to national politics just at present). I do see a healthy confidence that the progressive ideals that most of us here at DU adhere to have come out from under the clouds of right-wing obfuscation darkening them for the last several years, and realism is breaking through the overcast.

Now, I was watching pretty closely during 2004, and while I admit that I was convinced that Bush was toast then, there have been substantial developments since then that give me more hope than I've had since December 2000. No one is going to hand progressive forces the 2008 election, but we are better positioned than 2000, 2002, 2004, or 2006.

if he can get past the Mormon thing he's in phenomenal shape. He has no skeletons, has looks, a beautiful family, is bright, and will have more money than whoever he opposes. He's not the one I want to be facing.

15. He would draw moderates ...

I think Romney would draw moderates to the GOP but I think the fundamentalists (that book says nothing about a trip to America) would stay home if he's the nominee. I think he's got a tough row to hoe to get the nomination. I truly believe that fundies (unlike Pat Robertson) believe what they say about that book and will back it up with someone who promotes an unauthorized sequel.

Wait till the media starts "exploring Mormonism" along with all the wacky "proofs" of the origin of the Book of Mormon along with the magic disappearing plates.

21. Do not understimate him. I remember him during the 02 debates.
He was very good at presenting things in a way that made him look good.

8 years ago, everybody said that Bush did not stand a chance. Even if you consider the universal suffrage count, he came way too close from Gore.

He may lose some conservative votes because he is a Mormon, but he will get some moderate votes from being a Republican governor from MA, touting the fact that he can unify the country.

That and the fact that media has really pushed him as a major candidate for the last year in spite of the fact that he has rarely broke 10% in polling. Think of any Democrats polling 3% that the media would push?

he did it against Shannon O'Brien, a hack who ended up not even being able to hold up a job as the WB news investigative hard-copy type "reporter".

Mitt is just a boob. He's won one debate in his whole frigging life. Against a party hack named Shannon O'Brien.

Barack would school him, especially because they'll be matching in number of years of statewide elected office.
