The poison pet food scare threatens to become a poison people scare, now that we know that the toxic Chinese wheat gluten was human grade. The best "home-spun" research into the matter can be found on this D.U. page, where we learn that the Chinese company in question, Xuzhou Anying, advertises wheat gluten for sale on this site, using these words:

1. The proper term for it is "food grade" as opposed to "feed grade".
Just trying to clarify so as to avoid a little bit of the mass confusion that will no doubt result from this new monkeywrench.

3. Obviously you've never read the manual for any piece of computer equipment

manufactured in the far east.

They're first written in Mandarin, translated to Cantonese, then Japanese, then ancient Greek and, finally, to English by third graders.

Sure they could get it wrong.

No, try this order:

1. Mandarin
2. Sanskrit
3. Arabic
4. Hungarian
5. "English"

by which time, it is utter gibberish. Yes, I have tried to read user manuals...

4. Click on the link for the Chinese Company that produces it.....
Sorry, page not found
It may have moved, or it may no longer be available.

Gee, you'd almost think they have something to hide! :eyes: It makes one wonder how much of this stuff has already been consumed by Americans.

6. So, let's all panic, instead of...
A-- finding out if they're actually selling this to food producers.

B-- making sure that the FDA and Agriculture inspections at the ports are looking for tainted wheat and gluten

C-- finding out if domestic processors are spooked enough by all this to have started their own checks

This is the perfect thing for congresscritters and gasbags like Schumer to jump on, since inspection procedures already exist and it's only necesasary to insure that they are actually being done properly.

BTW, have I mentioned the imported frozen shrimp scam lately? You would be amazed at what comes into our ports and goes into our food-- from everywhere.

8. Del Monte has already said they purchased it as "food grade" gluten.
Whether or not Del Monte also used it in food, it's clear that some manufacturers could have, since it is being marketed as food grade.

I've also read that our trade agreements force us to rely on the inspections of the countries that are exporting the foods to us. Nice.

9. Just heard a few minutes ago that...
the FDA has banned gluten, and maybe wheat, imports from China.

That thing about trade agreements is a little tricky-- we still have the ability to inspect and ban imports for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is if they are poisonous.
