I was just being bored and channel surfing when I came upon an old episode of "Dharma and Greg" anyone remember that sitcom? It was the pilot episode where they were telling their folks they got married and her dad (Alan Rankin) got all upset because she was marrying a republican and will probably get a social security card and fall right in with the establishment who cares more for capital gains than poor children, and letting the gov't spy on it's own people (ss numbers)this was all suppose to make him look way over the top and funny, but if we only knew then........

4. yeah it had the canned laugh track like they all do but I also think
it was suppose to make you think he was way over the top because of some of the other extremes he goes to, he was supposed to be a 70's hippie into all the non-establishment stuff in a big way.

2. I loved her dad's character
but all I can remember from that first episode is her introducing Greg to her dog, and her dog's dog :)

3. I watched it once...didn't think it was funny or amusing...
never watched it again.

Felt the same way about "Roseanne," "Seinfeld," and that godawful "Married with Children" :eyes:

5. I think they were making a statement with comedy. I only watched
a couple of times, but got the jest of the situation...

Free-spirited girl raised by hippie parents marries into a very conservative family.

Elfman stars as Dharma Freedom Finkelstein-Montgomery, a free-spirited yoga instructor with an incredible knack for looking on the bright side. Raised by hippie parents, she was taught to shun convention, trust her wildest instincts, and find the joy in everyday life. Gibson plays Greg Montgomery, a conservative, Harvard-educated attorney and the yin to Dharma's yang. Married on their first date, they have remained committed to each other from day one, despite the obstacles presented by the world around them.

Among those obstacles are Dharma's counterculture parents, Abby (Mimi Kennedy) and Larry (Alan Rachins), who recently brought another bohemian bundle of joy — baby Harry — into the world. On the other side, literally, are Greg's uptight, blue-blood parents, Kitty (Golden Globe Award-nominee Susan Sullivan) and Edward (Mitchell Ryan), who've slowly but surely come to accept the fact that their son married outside the country club boundaries.
