"Tommy Thompson to Run for President" So, they could theoretically have a Thompson and Thompson
ticket?

WASHINGTON (AP) - Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson on Sunday joined the crowded field of Republicans running for the White House in 2008 and proclaimed himself the "reliable conservative" in the race.

Thompson, who was health and human services secretary during President Bush's first term, also said he is the only GOP candidate who has helped assemble both a state and federal budget.

Since announcing last year he was forming a presidential exploratory committee to raise money and gauge support, Thompson has lagged behind better-known rivals.

Thompson, 65, has focused his strategy on Iowa, which holds the nation's first caucuses for presidential nominees. He has made weekly visits to the state and sought to make the case that it will take a candidate who can carry the Midwest to win the nomination.

2. He is a joke. Remember his stellar performance during the anthrax scare?
An anxious country waited for someone in the govt to give us direction
about opening our mail. Finally this idiot gets up in front of the press
and is angry! Saying he "did not take the position of Sect of HEW to talk
about anthrax!" (direct quote)

Now we know why he took the job, to help big pharma and the insurance companies
fleece the public.

3. Tommy kind of surprised me on "This Week" (ABC) this morning.
He had a couple of ideas on Iraq I hadn't heard before (ask the Iraqi government to vote on whether they want us there; divide oil revenues 1/3 federal, 1/3 provinces, 1/3 directly to the people, "like we do in Alaska"(?)) and at least one on health care (create groups of citizens for insurance companies to cover). I'm not used to hearing new ideas as candidates announce.

I like the idea of a governor becoming president rather than a Senator. So I guess right at this moment I like Thompson (T.) on the R side and Richardson on the D.

5. I have thought for a long time that if Iraq is a democracy,
then let the people of Iraq have a referendum and decide if they want foreign troops in their country. I don't look for that to happen anytime soon.

11. Tommy
may have expressed good ideas, but he is a bastard who will do nothing to help the poor. He's been married to the same woman forever but they don't live together. He's a known womanizer and a JOKE!
Wait till the other Thompson's trophy wife with the huge silicone boobs gets known...a bimbo in the white house?

12. the history of only Governors being elected President
seems to be a faiirly powerful one. WHen is the last time a Senator was elected? Nixon? I can't remember if Bush 1 was a former Congressman or a Senator.

14. yeah, I thought he was a Congressman
interesting.

Richardson has some interesting experience. It bothers me though, that there is so much polling and maneuvering on the part of candidates when the primaries are still so far away.

7. It was great to get Thompson out of Wisconsin.
He had the line item veto and developed it into an art form, vetoing letters to create new words or to change language, and vetoing numbers to create new numbers. Imagine if Bush had that, particularly now when the Democrats control Congress.

8. Anyone catch the interview with Wolf today - I didn't follow get gov out of health but give Medicare
as a choice for everyone?

Is he saying no Medicare payroll tax but one buys a government policy called "medicare" - with a government subsidy paid to insurance companies - I was not paying attention so the above must be wrong, but the snipits of phrases that came from the TV into the kitchen were quite confusing.

Jeez. I was for Hunter Thompson.

16. Both philanderers -
even though Tommy has only been married once.

Tommy could benefit from the name confusion - there has been far more press on Fred than on Tommy - people will hear "Thompson" and vote for "Law and Order".
