Latest: Kerry flip-flopped on gay marriage
Edited on Thu Feb-12-04 05:31 AM by Brian_Expat
From the Seattle Times:

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2001856164_kerrygays12.html

WASHINGTON — Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry, who opposes gay marriage and hints he might support a limited ban, just two years ago signed a letter with other congressional colleagues urging the Massachusetts Legislature to drop a constitutional amendment outlawing homosexual nuptials.

. . . snip. . .

When asked whether he might support Massachusetts' constitutional amendment, he said it was possible.

"It depends entirely on the language on whether it supports civil union and partnership or not."

So not only has Kerry shifted to the right on this issue, it appears he has done so SOLELY to win election -- selling gay people down the river to get the Presidency. He's gone from opposing anti-gay amendments to supporting ones that have "the right language." It appears to me he's put getting elected as more important than the rights of GLBT people. :puke:

1. That's actually very consistent with what he has said all along
But in 2002, he joined his congressional colleagues in opposing Massachusetts' last effort to outlaw gay marriage, saying they feared it could prevent communities "from acting as they might wish to provide some form of recognition for same-sex relationships."

<snip>

Kerry has said he believes marriage — both legally and religiously — should be reserved between a man and woman, while civil unions between any couple are a legal right under the separation of church and state.

When asked whether he might support Massachusetts' constitutional amendment, he said it was possible.

3. It's not consistent
He voted against DOMA but now is considering a DOMA Amendment. This is a clear case of him selling gays down the river to get elected by appealing to bigotry.

2. It seems he would have left it up the legislature

but now that he disagrees with the SCOM decision, how would he vote if he was in the legislature yesterday morning? How would Edwards or Dean vote as well?

4. Edwards and Dean
both oppose an Amendment, no holds barred.

Kerry agrees with George W. Bush that an anti-gay Amendment could be a good thing. His "difference" with Bush is over "language," not the fact that such an amendment is an affront to American values.

5. Unfair, Brian. That's bringing up his pre-DLC self.
He has changed nearly 180 during the past 2 years, and what he's saying now is consistent with who he is (or is willing to be) now. So I don't think it's really fair to impeach him with old stuff.

DLCers support liberal policies only if it doesn't cost anything, so Kerry is being consistent on this issue.
