How about a black VP candidate? John Lewis?
Edited on Thu Feb-12-04 03:36 AM by ringmastery
Is that too risky for Kerry? I would think that racists who wouldn't vote for a candidate because they are black wouldn't vote for the democrats, anyway, so not much loss. It would get enormous amounts of positive press for the democrats to make a bold choice like this and energize african american voters like never before.

A Kerry/John Lewis ticket would be very interesting I think.

1. Chris Rock said that there would NEVER be a black VP candidate
because some black guy would just come along and shoot the president. Woudn't even care about going to jail, because they'd be a hero to all the black folks.

He was joking, of course. Probably. I wouldn't put anything past anyone nowadays.

2. The only problem
Is that most people don't know who the hell he is. Kerry would be at a disadvantage to pick Lewis over say, John Edwards as V.P. since Edwards already has a national following in several states.

after all the publicity. Did anyone know anything about Lieberman before he became the first jewish VP candidate?

4. I agree with that
Lieberman was totally unknown before Gore picked him as his running mate. But my main point still remains, Edwards, or someone like him, already has a nationwide following and Lewis doesn't.

6. blacks will turn out in droves
Turnout may be so high that it'll tip the balance in a few southern high black population states such as Louisana, Arkansas, and especially Florida.

Also he might help in Michigan, and Pennsylvania. Remember a week before the 2000 election, Gore was losing in almost all the polls. Pundits on election day were shocked how close the election was, one of the main reasons for this was a record breaking black turnout in many states, turnout the polls didn't anticipate.

8. My Personal Opinion...
...is that we'll see a woman first.

I don't think that I (age 48) will live to see a black Pres. or VP, but I do believe that people in their teens & 20s now will.

I do believe that I'll live to see a woman in one or both of these posts.

I think that he'll have to pick somebody that ill guarantee a lot of publicity (more than normal) to partially offset the huge $ advantage of the rethuglicans and resident bush.

9. I want a black woman.
The odds are we're running a white man for president again. I'd hit both of those glass ceilings at once with vp and go with a black woman.

Who would be on the list of possibilities?

When you have to ask who the possibilities are, I would think that pretty much says there aren't any. Credible candidates ready to be president --- and symbolism --- are two different things.

18. Unless we have an incumbant dem in 2012, I think Ford will be the nominee
He will have had 1 full term in the senate and a few terms in the house.

That is, if we can get him to beat Zach Wamp for Frists seat in 06

17. Lewis is a lousy orator, and probably more liberal than Kerry
If the nominee is Kerry, the vp isn't going to be someone who either is or seems as left-wing as him.

And Kerry definetly doesn't have the nomination locked up yet
