Why is Kerry even pretending to support the FMA?

The Repukes just have to point out his work on gay rights in the 80s, and Bush will take all the bigot vote and "Kerry is a Liberal hypocrite" vote...

It's sick to see America so bigoted that Kerry has to choose between looking like a stereotypical MA Liberal and a hypocritical asshole.

Which "supposedly" will allow civil unions but not gay marriage, i.e. Kerry's, Dean's and most other candidates' stance. I think it's still crap, but it's something, I suppose.
