Al Gore, the Nobel Prize, and 2008 .... a question about timing.
Will we know if President Gore won the Nobel Prize before it is too late for him to run for president again?

When do they announce the Nobels?

PS: Jim Inhoff is too much of a pre-upright caveman to even figure out how to buy Geico Insurance and Geico dot Com.

6. two reasons:
first: he hasn't done anything to earn one, or do you think he should get a prize for having a documentary made of him giving a PowerPoint presentation? Sure, it was a great PowerPoint (Keystone, actually) but come on, when there is a Nobel Prize for PowerPoint, I am totally supporting him. Until then, please.

second: the Nobel Committee isn't going to hand the Peace Prize (the one I assume you are talking about) to two US politicians in 5 years.

8. well... I think they are taking into consideration far more than a powerpoint presentation...
and regarding your second point... is there a precedent?

12. well, I don't think they are taking it into consideration at all, actually
what, exactly, has Mr. Gore's contribution to world peace been this year?

as for precendent, who cares? the Nobel Committee needs no precedent. but they have never given it to opposition politicians in the same country, against the same leader, twice. (here's the list:http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/)

There's something to be said for showing the people of the world what they have in common.

16. In order to have peace in the world...
...one has to have a world, first and foremost. That's his contribution.

11. The contents of the powerpoint presentation
Edited on Wed Mar-21-07 04:41 PM by karynnj
took a complicated scientific issue and made it accessible to non-scientists.

His chances may be hurt because it impacts mostly just the US, because the science was never in doubt in the rest of the world. If the US turns and seriously addresses global warming and joins the world - it might be more due to Gore than any other politician. If either Gore or Kerry had become President, this would have been done as a normal part of their agendas - and no one would talk of a Nobel Peace Prize. The reason here, if it happens, would be the fact that he had to fight an entrenched system.

I also wonder if someone like Abdullah of Jordan who has been trying to achieve peace in the ME might be a choice. There are so many things that someone may help - Darfur, Iran etc (I doubt anyone could get it for fixing Iraq - as it is a huge mess)

15. you haven't met my boss!
he definately could. man makes powerpoints for our weekly staff meeting (ok, technically, I make powerpoints for him) and we have a whopping 5 people in the firm.

I'd say, on average, my powerpoint runs 4 hours a day.

19. Welcome to the world we live in today...
Even if it were just that, why the hell not? It is a form of media that he has used to contribute more to world peace than any book could... but his book is coming.

7. Winner is announced in mid-October...
and prize is awarded in December.

FWIW, Al Gore was nominated by two Norwegian politicians from opposite sides of their respective aisle, and the Peace Prize is awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. Maybe a "home field advantage" here.

18. Does it really matter?
50% of Americans already have a positive opinion of Al Gore - according to the latest polls.

And by the way - that puts Gore ahead of Hillary, Obama and Edwards. ;)

Unfortunately - 40% of Americans (still) have a negative opinion of Al Gore. Probably they would never vote him.

Do you think those numbers would change if Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize? :eyes:

I think the people who hate Al now will not change their position based on that.

I also think that Al Gore can win the Presidency - with or without a Nobel Peace Prize.

"If (Al) was going to run in the future, of course I would support him. I think he'd be a fantastic president. He already got a majority of votes of people in this country once, and so that says something."
