The underlying crime pales in comparison to the cover-up (had Bush & co. merely told the truth from the beginning, nothing would have happened. Likewise, had Nixon's people merely told the truth, instead of trying to cover it up, Nixon probably would have been unharmed.)

There's even a 'secret tape system,' except this time it is emails. So much evidence going back and forth between Bushco.--now there's even an '18 day gap,' much like the gap in the Nixon tapes.

Then there's Fred Fielding, who was also counsel for Nixon. Then there's the subpoena battle, much like the scandal. It's all just really ironic.

1. Amazing how history repeats itself again and again...
and amazing how Republicans keep getting elected. People are fools who never learn from their mistakes.

10. "Those who do not learn from history, are doomed to repeat it."
The Repugs haven't learned, but not enough voters have learned either.

2. I know. I'll know I'm dreaming if tonight's TV show lineup includes:
Starsky & Hutch
The Rockford Files
Get Christie Love
Welcome Back Kotter

And if Walter Cronkite is anchoring the CBS News instead of that awful Couric woman.

Aside from the TSA no-fly list, that is.

5. Watergate was amateur hour compared to this.
Watergate was their kindergarten. After Watergate they systematically, methodically worked to eliminate every obstacle Nixon faced: free press, hostile Congress, independent judiciary.

Oops, the hostile Congress is back.

8. Damn straight!
The single greatest event in the last hundred years, assuming that America is to be saved, is the election of 2006 and Karl Rove knows it.

those the media focused on.

In the case of Nixon, he authorized the Huston Plan which involved ordering the CIA and the FBI to assist and provide cover for partisan dirty-tricks against the Democrats, including plans to kidnap, drug and blackmail delegates at the Democratic National Convention. It also involved the military for the first time in some domestic undercover spying activities, including impersonating TV news crews, as well as mass surveillance and penetration of domestic political groups by military intelligence, the use of agents provocateur, and providing explosives and firearms to trageted groups. http://www.icdc.com/~paulwolf/cointelpro/churchfinalreportIIIk.htm

In the USA firings, there is a backstory involving espionage, generation of bogus Iraq WMD intelligence (MZM), foreign funding of GOP leaders (Cerberus and Abramoff), and an effort to privatize and politicize, and exploit US intelligence and defense capabilities.

Here are the "inner scandals" coming to light now:

Former Appropriations Chair Jerry Lewis (R-CA) - distributed hundreds of thousands to favored GOP lawmakers through his own PAC. That money was provided by corrupt defense contractors, MZM and ADCS (Wade, Wilkes), and a huge Israeli-controlled global hedge fund, Cerberus-Gabriel. Two US Attorneys investigated. One, Carol Lam, was fired. The other, Debra Wong Yang, accepted a $1.7 million signing bonus to go to work for the LA Law form that's defending Lewis. See, http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/3/10/21556/5045

In addition, a major California GOP fundraiser, Gerry Parsky, headed the "Parsky Commission" that picked the replacements for fired US Attorneys. Parsky was a partner in that same LA Law Firm, and runs his own "vulture capital"/defense contracting company that's selling off key US defense companies to foreign investors. 11. I love Marx's quotation for this
"Hegel said that all great world historical events and personages appear, so to speak, twice. He forgot to add: the first time as tragedy, the second as farce."

I'm talking about another one, after the Senate wanted to subpoena people in the WH. He invoked executive privilege then too
