What was the alternative for US Attorneys?

Ok, let's assume the Republican talking point that US Attorney's serve at the pleasure of the President, and can
be fired whenever he feels like it.

So I'm US Attorney for x territory, and the President's aide calls me up and says, we would like you to indict CongressmanX 3 weeks before an election. What has he done wrong? Nothing. After he loses the election, you can say some witness recanted or something...

So what's my option as US Attorney? Indict somebody I know didn't do anything wrong, or since I know i'll be fired for not being a "Bushie", I quit.

And Republicans say this is just fine?

Indict somebody we want you to. Don't indict somebody we don't want you to, or lose your job.

And this is just all normal personnel matters to Repulicans?

An AG had better not indict on the basis of a political vendetta or he is most likely engaged in corrupt criminal behavior himself.
