Hillary Clinton is as American as baseball and apple pie
and as hot as a sizzling slice of pizza pulled straight from the oven rack.

As an ardent Obama supporter myself, I sat down tonight and perused the situation, wondering what it is that makes this lady so popular. Then I had an epiphany. It dawned on me that Hillary Clinton is the quintessential All-American woman. Couple that with her brilliant mind, her determination, and her charm, and it almost makes her impossible to beat. Obama has his work cut out for him, but I'm not giving up hope.

May the best one win.

45. How obnoxious of you
The OP set a positive tone for the discussion and right out of the gate here's a Hillary supporter with a fresh hot serving of snark.

I gather you aren't here to win support for your candidate or credibility for yourself. If you are you may want to rethink your strategy.

61. Gosh could it be the taunting?
I noticed that many of the very first replies from Clinto supporters were basically taunting those who might be prone to post something negative.

I must say, some Clinton supporters appear to be going out of their way to increase the strife and attacks on their candidates. Kind of makes the wailing and gnashing of teeth a bit less believable, not to mention the sack-cloth and ashes routine and the cross-draggins we see from time to time.

I thought the OP was very good and there was so much opportunity for a positive discussion. How sad so many thought otherwise.

2. What makes her Popular?
Her husband. If she was the same person without Bill she would not even be acknowledged. He makes her. People support her because of him.

4. bullshit
without hillary, bill never would have been president.

It all would have ended in the 1992 primaries if she didn't appear on 60 Minutes to battle the infidelity allegations. And that's just one example. There are hundreds more where Hillary saved Bill's ass.

8. Your Wrong
People like Bill because of his charm. The way he speaks and relates to people. That is what drawed African Americans to him. He knew how to relate to them. It was not because of her. Hell when she was in Selma. the applause was nothing campared to what it would have been if Bill would have spoke or Obama. They were polite to her becuase of him.

14. Yes I Did
I also know if Bill gave that speech he would have had several standing ovations. The media even compared her speech to one that Bill might give and said the mood was not there. She tried but she was not him. There is a way you have to seak to the crowd to move them especially in an african American church. Again they were polite. The mood was not there. There is something I know about speaking in a black church being that I am African American you have to move the crowd. If you would have taken notes when they were talking about what Obama did in the church down the street, it was a big difference. Even the media stated he moved the crowd more because he knows how to talk to them.

That is one thing she is lacking especially if she tries to get the black vote. She is not going to be able to reach back for Bill all the time. And believe me. I love myself some Bill. But she is not Bill.

16. No, she isn't Bill
no one has his speaking skills. I've seen him speak in person a couple of times, and I've also seen Barack, Hillary, and many others. No one comes close to Bill, no doubt about it. But she got a great reception in Selma - I watched her speech several times, as well as Obama's.

35. True Enough..
Bill does take original thoughts and create new ideas benefiting the American People. He has a habit of not regurgitating the same ole memes over and over again numbing the crowd into a hypnotic state. He knows just how to bring the crowd to their feet in full participation of his new and fresh ideas for America.

Hillary may not possess the same style but her speeches are original, meaningful and she's learning to strike the right cord with her audience.

46. Her Speeches
Her speeches are talking points. They are tested before she even gets out of the gate. People know this and that is why she gets the anti hillary reaction. If for once she could speak from her heart and act like she is sincere maybe just maybe she would gain more people being loyal to her.

Her speeches are about reformation of the American Dream. All that the Republicans, primarily Bush, have taken away from US. However, your point is well taken. I'm sure as time goes by, she will improve her delivery as it would make all the difference in the world as to how she is perceived.

26. Hillary was wrong in her Selma speech. Civil Rights movement was not a women's right movement!
Hillary (and all women) owe everything to the Suffragettes, to Susan B. Anthony, Emma Goldman, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Jane Addams, and many other brave women, anarchists, socialists, communists, that in the 19th and early 20th century fought for women's equality which included abortion rights, divorce rights, etc.

The Civil Rights movement was concerned about building up Black men. Women were told that they need to focus on helping the men overcome the subjugation that racism had imposed on them for generations. Read some of the literature from this period and you will see what I mean.

Even as late as the 1970s, Black activists saw the women's movement as being primarily one of middle class white women, having little to do with the struggles of Black America.

34. Suffragists, please.
Suffragette was a disparaging term coined by the anti-women's suffrage movement. Much like the term we have today "femi-nazi" And, Hillary Clinton and all women owe their rights to not only the suffragists but to the women's liberation movement of the 60s and 70s. Without the women's liberaiton movement of the 60s and 70s women would still be looking for jobs in sex segregated help wanted ads (yes, the classifed ads for employment were separated: Female Help Wanted and Male Help Wanted up until 1974 and, guess which types of jobs were in the female columns!), we would be excluded from sports in the public school system, we would not have any reproductive rights. The women's liberation movement grew out of the civil rights movement. The gay movement grew out of the women's rights movement.
The civil rights movement had a backbone made up of women. The 1955 bus boycott was conceived of by the women's council in Montgomery, Alabama. Ella Baker, Fannie Lou Hamer were prominent women in the civil rights movement. By saying that the civil rights movment encouraged women to focus on men is not true. Sexism existed in the civil rights movement just as racism existed in the women's liberation movement. However, the women's liberation movement was filled with African American women from the very beginning. Read the literature. Start with WORDS OF FIRE a compilation of black feminist essays.

And the inverse could also be true; behind every great woman is a greater man!

I still won't vote for her, unless she is the nominee.

I prefer someone not of the oligopoly. The Clinton family no longer can make that claim. Imagine four Presidents; a husband and wife, a father and son...all in succession. That is not something to cheer for. It's something to mourn. However I will take the lesser of two evils as a strategic move.

Oh no you don't

Yes you do you dont want a repug

Hell no we do not want her

Well she is better than any repug

Girl I will slap you crazy if you touch that lever.

Yes, I am we don't want the repug remember.

Slap

Why you hit me.

Because I told you not to vote for her

Well, we are better off without a repug. I thought you would want that.

Ok, if that is the only chance we can get out of this Hell hole we are in since we have no other choice.

These are the exact words and actions I would have to go through to vote for her.

But right now I do not have to settle. Go Barack Go!

I always thought it was odd that out of a nation of 300+ million people that the best-qualified person for the job would just happen to be the wife of the previous president from that party. Still kind of a head-scratcher. Regardless of politics, I think the same thing about Shrub and Bush Sr. It just seems fishy and smacks more of brand recognition than anything else.

55. If being "all American" is having your
finger up in the air constantly to see which way the wind is blowing, voting to authorize the Bush Crime Family to slaughter Iraqis, being the living embodiment of raw political ambition....then, yeah, Hillary is right up there with mom and apple pie.

Can't be me 'cause I'm not in the same room as YOU!
Funny that a member of DU w/ over a thousand posts would feel the need to insult someone for expressing their opinion. If all the gushing about Hillary makes me want to vomit and I say so, it's my opinion and this IS the forum for expressing it.
I did not insult the person who started this thread, just the sentiment it expressed.

Edited on Wed Mar-21-07 01:10 PM by Dr Fate
My bartender too. And everyone at the bar.

An everyone around the water cooler, grocery lline & bus-stop just GUSHES over her.

And dont get me started on how they love her at the VFW hall and the Masonic Lodge- or so I've heard.

Yup, that Hill is really something- "Little Miss Liberty" is what they all call her. She may as well dress up like the Statue of Liberty itself, seeing as how all of America already sees her that way.

Gets me all MISTY it does.

God Bless the U S of A!!!

71. When Will We Learn
Bush became President because of his last name.

Hillary is in the race because of her last name.

Think we would learn from the Bush disaster.

Hillary is lowlife warmonger scum.

You like lying to start wars, vote for Hillary.

86. So were the jurors in Benet's The Devil and Daniel Webster
as American as baseball and apple pie, as Mr. Webster's adversary pointed out to him in that classic short story.

It's worth another read, now that everybody's out of high school.
