colo spgs police rough up 65 year old peace protestor--more pics
I wrote earlier about the police roughing up one of our most active and outspoken peace protestors--the link below gives some horrifyingly clear pics of what they were doing.

1. Colorado Springs Is The Land of The Jesus Freak
I am not surprised that this is happening.

If you really want to get results from these photos, send them outside the United States. The Australian and French newspapers, for instance, will snap them right up. Same for the Latin American nations where * was just "welcomed" with protests.

4. maggie suggested sending them to the international press, which I will be doing later. there is a
reason Colorado is known as "the hate state"--and this is part of it.

11. What did she do? She was promoting peace.
35 members of the Justice and Peace Commission had a permit to march in the parade under the banner of "The Bookman," a local business owned by Commission chairman Eric Verlo.

The group says police blocked it from the route, when parade organizers saw anti-war signs. According to the Justice and Peace Commission, parade organizers told the group that "social issues" aren't allowed in the parade.

Colorado Springs Police say seven marchers were cited with failing to desist or disperse.

Witnesses to the confrontation say three of the demonstrators required medical help.

9. The brand new Chief of police is not a happy guy right now.
This will be interesting to follow. Also, in The Gazette, the peace walkers said they had participated in the parade last year. Last year the parade was in a different part of town, Old Colorado City, a funkier, more touristy part of Colorado Springs. This is the first year it has been right downtown.

10. they have regularly been part of the parade, when it was here in the slightly more open-minded part
of town, and there have not been any problems.

as for the police and them blocking traffic--we have NEVER had that sort of thing here in OCC--people wander through the parade, nobody pays any attention.

john o'donnell (the parade organizer) and I are going to have a little discussion on monday)

12. Just a thought...
...but how about contacting the ACLU? It looks like in addition to the injuries and the horrible treatment, there is a First Amendment issue. They also might be able to advise those who who were injured as to their best course of legal action. IMO, hit them in the pocketbook. If nothing else, it should get their attention.

Those pictures were shocking. How anyone could treat a person that age in that manner? Evil, IMO.

16. That may be taken care of ...
by "Bill Durland, former judge, and present ACLU co chair at durlandwe@msn.com" who is pictured having his blood pressure taken at the scene.
Even driving by this town (as fast as I can) on the church-lined interstate gives me the creeps.

17. What pisses me off is that these cops don't get punished for this type of disgusting behavior.
I feel that when we see these kinds of police crimes occuring that we should have the right to stop the police with force. Police should NOT have that much power. As it stands now, those cops can do that shit with NO FEAR of being stopped. It's wrong and pathetic that we supposedly "Free" Americans should have to just sit and take this kind of abuse from authority. It's demoralizing and unAmerican.

19. horrifying...isn't it ironic
activists for peace can't be treated peacefully?

up is down. no is yes. this is the crazy world of the early 21st century which is destined to go down in history as america's dark ages symbolized by the amazingly bad, worse, worstest president ever to cheat his way into the white house. and i say that optimistically...with the hope that after these dark days we WILL get our country back.

20. So they were not blocking anything but just marching in a parade with peace signs???
If that is true then the police have committed a crime. Hell I'm sure that if the damn Klu Klux Klan wanted to march they would have been able to.

I think it is labeled under "Free Speech"

Why drag an 80 year old woman with a cane?

Why an illegal choke hold?

WTF was really going on?

22. I just read that they had a "permit". Were they marching or blocking?
If they were just marching or had a protest in another area and were not blocking the parade I want to send this around to my email list. But I want to be sure what happened?????

It looks like that 80 year old woman was not blocking anyone.

23. Fort Collins was a lot nicer to peace activists.
Peace activists not only were allowed to march in the St. Patrick's Day parade, they had an official float and were an official part. There were a lot of protesters there, at least dozens, maybe over a hundred, and we got a lot of cheers, and very few jeers from the crowds.

25. Man, Fuck the Police.
How is this legal for the police to do, there were no violent protesters, only peace loving people who want their message heard. This country is going down fast. Bush and his cronies have undone every last bit of good done by Clinton and even Bush 1. By far the biggest waste of sex ever in the history of the sex. George Senior should have pulled out that night.
