Dems that voted for Gonzales' confirmation have some REAL explaining to do
Edited on Sat Mar-17-07 11:44 AM by fujiyama
Just sayin'....Wasn't it pretty obvious this guy was a hack from the beginning?

Then again, it looks like the usual suspects that sell out Dems on just about everything:

Landrieu (D-LA)
Lieberman (D-CT)
Nelson (D-FL)
Nelson (D-NE)
Pryor (D-AR)
Salazar (D-CO)

Thing is, for all her boot licking of Bush, Landrieu is going to face a hell of a time trying to get reelected. And considering she'll never win over the RWers, she's probably alienated a fair number of the remaining liberals left in LA.

1. In their defense...
...he appeared to be better than Ashcroft, not that that's saying much.

7. True enough, and his confirmation was a certainty.
Landrieu is fairly conservtative.
We know about Liebermann.
Salazar may have been attempting to avoid problems with some of his constituents.

The rest? No idea.

2. Compared to who else * could've nominated...
Gonzales may not have seemed too bad. He wasn't known as an extremist, as I recall. No one * would've nominated would've been good.

I agree
but when you know the choice is bad anyways, why not atleast show unanimous disagreement with ANY of Bush's picks?

4. I see what you mean. But it's wastes time & $$$.

There were other very important things going on. Could've been they thought, why drag it out? Bush might recall the nomination and name someone really really bad, and then what? I would think, well, better grab this one that doesn't seem too bad, or we might get someone worse.

3. Like John Breaux?
Dem. Breaux, a co-sponsor of the Medicare Reform Act, is possibly going to run for Governor of La.

6. Yeah, I heard about that
I've heard that both Landreiu and the governor are going to have a tough time. BTW is Blanco going to run again as well? How will post Katrina demographics affect politics in the state? I've heard it will be quite difficult for Dems to win statewide. Though I know Breux is popular.

11. Find and work for better candidates
Did you work in the last senatorial campaign?
Are you a member of PDA?
Did you mail, telephone and e-mail your senators?
I know most here at DU are active politically so the generalization is probably not applicable to you.

The problem with these senators is obvious in their voting records and statements.
Organizing for a grassroots alternative is a hope citizens of those states can work for.

They suck, and you know it, but without true choice you are left with voting for either
Republican full strength, or Republican lite like these 6 assholes.

Good luck in your battle.

8. I'd expect them to vote for Gonzales
When I think of Democrats of questionable loyalties, those 6 come to mind.

17. Not sure I agree with you there, Andy.
It's my understanding that most of the folks in the 9th Ward didn't vote. If they had, Bush might well have never been elected in the first place.

(Note: I believe I read that about the voting....I'm not trying to make any kind of sweeping generalization.)

So they could've been liberal, conservative, or apolitical, and it wouldn't matter, if most of them didn't vote.

12. As I recall ...

As I recall Gonzalez was in the spotlight even before the nomination for his views on the "Unitary Executive". Gonzalez believes the president is an elected king so it is not surprising that he would sidestep the laws of congress to bend to any will of the executive.

13. have a call in to my idiot DINO (salazar) to ask why there has been nothing but silence from him on
his good buddy, gonzo the torturer. he does not bother to respond, any more than he bothered to respond about his silence on Building 18-- or his vote authorizing torture.

he is a mess, a fact of which I remind him regularly.

16. Both Gonzales and Rice proved they were UNFIT for their offices - neither
should have received one Dem vote after 9-11 and Abu Ghraib.
