WASHINGTON, March 14 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., says she would keep a reduced but significant military force in Iraq if elected president.

In an interview with The New York Times, Clinton said there were "vital national security interests" that would require U.S. troops to remain in Iraq.

She said the troops should be used to fight "al-Qaida, deter Iranian aggression, protect the Kurds" and provide some support to the Iraqi military, the newspaper said.
