what? I've always assumed it was generally pathetic, but it's been around for so long I'm beginning to think I should check it out. Anyone here with some consistent and direct knowledge, who could save me the trouble of reading through it, would be a receiving muchos gracias from me...

4. TNR is going through a real reconstruction.
I've had a subscription off and on for several years. It has been infuriating in its support of the IRaq war, but then it apologized for it a few months ago! They said they were wrong!

It has a dearth of female writers. I would like to see their female writers increase to 50% with the men.

Marty Peretz is a constant source of irritation. He seems to want this role and glories in it.

I think editor Peter Beinert is strong and he is OK (altho maybe a bit too sure of himself). I guess he was behind the turnaround on the War. He needed to be!

Stanley Kauffman, movie critic, is an older man. He is a genius in writing film reviews that are revealing and meaningful so that the reader gets a good sense of the movie they are about to see. I appreciate that. I also think he is brilliant.

I love the art reviews. I only wish they would print them sooner because if they do them at the end of their run it is difficult to run and see them! (I missed a great Renaissance Venetian art exhibit at the Metropolitan last winter because the review ran 10 days before the exhibit ended and the art went back to Italy!).

These are my thoughts. I do like the magazine despite its faults. HOpe this helps!

6. It is a hawkish, center-left mag
Endorsed Gore in 2000, it's known for its pro-Israel stance.

The articles are smart and interesting. I've subscribed in the past.

Good mag, basically.

That alone shows the writers for THE NEW REPUBLICAN like to float in the rarefied air of the GOP Lasseiz Fairyland!

9. Primarily a right-wing rag
Many years ago (in the 80s) I made the mistake of subscribing -- canceled after the first 3 issues.

Drivel....

There's not much passion for their DLCish viewpoint now.
