Nevada Dems Nix Fox Debate

By: Ryan Grim
March 9, 2007 05:36 PM EST

The Nevada State Democratic Party is pulling out of a controversial presidential debate scheduled for Aug. 14 in Reno and co-hosted by Fox News, according to Democratic insiders.

The debate was being hosted by Fox News Channel and Fox News Radio, the Nevada State Democratic Party and the Western Majority Project.

Democratic activists have protested that Fox is not a suitable partner for the event. Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards announced Wednesday that he would not participate in the debate, citing Fox's conservative ties as a factor. New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson has said publicly that he would attend the debate; no other Democratic candidate has formally responded to an invitation.

MoveOn.org Civic Action claims to have collected more than 260,000 signatures on a petition that calls the cable network a "mouthpiece for the Republican Party, not a legitimate news channel."

Democratic leaders in Nevada as well as native son Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader, initially touted the debate as a way for Democrats to reach outside the party's normal rank and file.

But in a letter posted Wednesday on the state party's website, Democratic chairman Tom Collins said Reid now shared concerns voiced by Democratic activistgs and "has asked us to take another look."

A Fox spokeswoman didn’t immediately return a call for comment.

6. CUE THE VONAGE THEME!
And the new Air America helped! They offered to co-sponsor, and when Fox said they'd have to be out-represented 3-to-1, they offered to sponsor the Republican debates!

:woohoo:
