Dowd is A Cleaned Up Version of Coulter
http://www.dailyhowler.com/

"WHEN YOU READ DOWD, YOU’RE RIDING WITH COULTER: The nation’s big papers and pundits have been exceptionally dainty about Ann Coulter’s latest. On Friday, at a major conservative political gathering in DC, she called John Edwards a “f*ggot.” This has produced little reporting or commentary in the mainstream press. For example, Coulter’s comment has not been mentioned in any of the Washington Post’s news reporting. (It was mentioned, very briefly, in passing, in Dana Milbank’s Saturday “sketch.”) If Nexis is to be believed, it hasn’t been mentioned in the Boston Globe or the Chicago Tribune at all. This morning, USA Today skips it.

<snip>

But then, why should pundits criticize Coulter when she describes Dem males as big “f*ggots?” It’s very similar to the gender-based “analysis” their dauphine, the Comptesse Maureen Dowd, has long offered. In Dowd’s work, John Edwards is routinely “the Breck Girl”(five times so far—and counting), and Gore is “so feminized that he’s practically lactating.” Indeed, two days before we voted in November 2000, Dowd devoted her entire column, for the sixth time, to an imaginary conversation between Gore and his bald spot. “I feel pretty,” her headline said (pretending to quote Gore’s inner thoughts). That was the image this idiot wanted you carrying off to the voting booth with you! Such is the state of Maureen Dowd’s broken soul. And such is the state of her cohort.

And now, in the spirit of fair play and brotherhood, she is extending this type of “analysis” to Barack Obama. In the past few weeks, she has described Obama as “legally blonde” (in her headline); as “Scarlett O’Hara” (in her next column); as a “Dreamboy,” as “Obambi,” and now, in her latest absurd piece, as a “schoolboy” (text below). Do you get the feeling that Dowd may have a few race-and-gender issues floating around in her inane, tortured mind? But this sort of thing is nothing new for the comptesse. Indeed, such imagery almost defines the work of this loathsome, inane Antoinette.

Coulter has been visibly disturbed ever since hitting cable in the mid-90s. But Dowd is a borderline nutcase too—a slightly cleaned up version of Coulter. (Ah, we Irish! Yes, each had an Irish Catholic dad.) Coulter comes right out and calls Dem men “f*ggots”—but Maureen Dowd has always come close. Just as Chris Matthews is a slightly cleaned-up William Donohue, Dowd is a more presentable Coulter. For mainstream voters, Maureen is easier to take. For that reason, she has done us more harm."

2. For some time now I've not been able to understand
why Maureen Dowd is considered a liberal. I agree with your assessment of her. For my money, the ONLY liberal columnist out there was the late, great Molly Ivins. How I miss her.

3. There's no comparison.
Dowd can be quite biting, but 'faggot'? The 9/11 widows are 'enjoying their husbands' deaths'?

Come on. Coulter's in a league of her own.

Dowd takes on Dems and Repubs. She's no one's girl. And that's the way columnists should be.

7. They both make their living by attacking gender, particularly Democrats,
I believe this to be the main thrust of the column. Just like most of today's media, style over substance, emotion over logic, prejudice over fairness, rumor over fact and slander over justice.

They both appeal to the lowest common denominator, the biggest difference being Dowd aims for the high brow and Coulter the low.

16. For your enjoyment:

* After President George W. Bush's April 2006 push to promote renewable energy, Dowd stated that Bush had made a "concession speech to Al Gore" but then added: "he president sounded a bit like a wild-eyed Ozone Man himself yesterday, extolling the virtues of alternative fuel derived from cooking grease, sugar, grass, wood chips, soybean oil and corn." (4/26/06)

* After attending the February 2002 World Economic Forum, Dowd wrote that her "whole body hurt" from the "chat about coalitions, commonalities and global climate crises." Dowd continued: "The confab - overrun with charts, hand-held computers and technobabble - was starting to feel like an evening with ... Al Gore." (2/3/02)

* In a 2001 column, Dowd described Gore as "the champion of Kyoto and author of a chicken-little polemic warning of 'an ecological Kristallnacht' and 'wasteland.'" (8/5/01)

* While complaining that the Bush administration has "reeled" the country "backwards so fast," Dowd acknowledged that she "used to think" Gore was "striving too geekily to be Millennial Man. The Palm Pilot on your belt. The Blackberry. The Earth-cam you dreamed of. Citing 'Futurama' as your favorite show. The obsessions about global warming and the information highway. Boldly choosing the first Jewish running mate. But now I'm going hungry for a shred of modernity." (6/1/01)

* While discussing Gore's consideration of installing a webcam in the Oval Office, should he become president, Dowd asserted: "I have zero desire to see President Gore round the clock, putting comely interns to sleep with charts and lectures on gaseous reduction." (10/19/00)

* In 1999, Dowd claimed that "Al Gore is so feminized and diversified and ecologically correct, he's practically lactating." (6/16/99)

And on the Little Annie Fanny side:

On the July 27 edition of MSNBC's Hardball, host Chris Matthews asked right-wing pundit Ann Coulter, "How do you know that Bill Clinton is gay?" referring to her comment the night before on CNBC's The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch that Clinton "shows some level of latent homosexuality." Coulter responded, "I don't know if he's gay. But Al Gore - total fag." She went on to defend her theory about Clinton's sexuality by stating that "everyone has always known, widely promiscuous heterosexual men have, as I say, a whiff of the bathhouse about them." Coulter claimed she was "just kidding" about Gore, but said of her theory about Clinton, "It's not only not a joke, it's not even surprising."

4. There are good columnist and bad columnist in both parties.
The difference is that there are very few good columnists in the Republican party and many bad ones. Fortunately the Democrats have very few bad columnists and they are still head and shoulders above their Republican counterparts.

6. The really sad part is the size of the Repug audience that reads these two 'MORANS'
Furthermore, I continue to find it more and more difficult to have a factual conversation with a Repug because of their fact-less based perception of reality - what I call Repug BizzaroWorld.

8. I make it a habit of never watching msnbc or cnn or any of the pundits..
It's foolish to get caught up with their punditry.
If everyone would just cease and desist watching these
emotional twisters, their ratings would go below feasible,
and guess what- They'd be off the air...

Repubs only watch them for their daily talking points.

11. Their personal lives and psyches seem bitterly similar
Edited on Mon Mar-05-07 03:44 PM by Snellius
Both are single and always have been. For both, the bloom has long since gone off the rose, yet they still like to see themselves in the mirror of their own vanity and to pose themselves as alluring, mini-skirted coquettes. Two middle-aged women who still talk about "dating" like they were still sixteen. And they both seem to have a huge love-hate relation to their stereotypes of men, who are either some authoritarian alpha-male or some emasculated girlie-boy.

12. Those imaginary conversations have got to be the laziest "journalism" ever.
It's a tactic Dowd uses often. I've contended for a long time that she writes her columns in five minutes. How hard can it be to make up a story (complete with dialogue!) that addresses nothing more serious than someone's style and that is heavily laden with junior-high level snark. We should all have such easy, well-paid jobs.

14. No comparison whatsoever.
Maureen Dowd was writing award winning articles when Ann Coulter was slithering in anonymity and working in slime to discredit to Bill Clinton.

The only thing they have in common is that they are both women...and I'm not sure about that.

17. It's not whether I like or dislike her or even whether I agree with her politics,
Edited on Tue Mar-06-07 10:44 AM by Uncle Joe
it's her inane technique of attacking our potential leaders based on sliming their gender. With the world going to hell in a hand basket, we could use some serious analysis from the mass corporate media for a change instead of this banal waste of time. Dowd is just a symptom of a much larger problem in that regard, while Coulter is exceptionally crude about it, Dowd is semi-entertaining, but she is sending the same message and whether she intends to or not, she reinforces Coutler's message.

Edit for P.S. For example, Coulter called Edwards a faggot, Dowd has repeatedly referred to him as a Breck Girl, Coulter has referred to Al Gore as a fag, Dowd said he was practically lactating that doesn't leave too much room for disagreement.
