The Selma to Montgomery marches, which included Bloody Sunday, were three marches that marked the political and emotional peak of the American civil rights movement. They were the culmination of the movement in Selma, Alabama for voting rights, launched by Amelia Boynton Robinson and her husband, who brought many prominent leaders of the American Civil Rights Movement to Selma, including Martin Luther King Jr., Jim Bevel, and Hosea Williams. "Bloody Sunday" occurred on March 7, 1965, when 600 civil rights marchers were attacked by state and local police with billy clubs and tear gas. Only the third, and last, march successfully made it into Montgomery. The route is memorialized as the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail.

Evidently, the collection plate is being passed around. Lewis joked that if they did not have any money, to borrow it from their neighbor, and then pay it back.

11. Obama offers the promise of a New Frontier, as JFK did
while a certain Senator running for President can only offer a return to the past, and all the baggage that that entails.

different with wisdom and humility to bring us forth and to dispel the bushco taint upon our collective soul as a nation.

13.  The Rev. Joseph Lowery now speaking.
Edited on Sun Mar-04-07 01:19 PM by flpoljunkie
Before Rev. Lowery, Obama received quite a send up from the Rev. Bishop Kirkland who invoked "executive privilege" to speak today, according to the pastor of the Selma AME Church.

The Re. Josephy Lowery is now speaking; he is the Co-Founder of the SCLC. Says he turned down an offer to speak across the street to come speak to these "crazy folks."

Rev. Lowery is quite the character and a wonderful speaker. He spoke truth to power at Coretta Scott King's service last year, as I recall.

"42 years ago if someone had told me that one day, when I was walking across that bridge being beaten, having a concussion, that I would be standing here as a member of the House of Rep. I'd say you were crazy, you're out of your mind. But all things are possible with God."
