Poll question: Your opinion on Dean's Thoughts : What should happen if Osama is caught?
Edited on Sat Dec-27-03 11:27 AM by seventhson
Some folks are trying to make a big deal out of Dean's statements on Osama and what should happen if he is caught. Dean issued a very concise statement yesterday on his site which clarified, to some degree, his position, by stating that he thinks the death penalty is appropriate for Osama and that Osama should be handled as Bush has said Saddam will be handled.

That is: he will be tried and sentenced in a manner which will withstand international scrutiny.

The real question is: What process is THAT?

I think the Dean campaign should know and many here should state their thoughts and see if there is a concensus on what that process should be and do Dean's thoughts on the subject comport with what most of us here and most Americans believe.

What do YOU think is best to be done with Osama if he is caught?

Please state your reasons and what you think Americans want and/or what Dean SHOULD say or SHOULD have said.

2. I haven't voted....
but that last option won't be receiving any votes IMHO.

First thing: we have to assume that OBL does in fact exist as a man.
Second, we have to BELIEVE what the US government says about OBL,
i.e., that he is behind the WTC "attack".
Third, we have to assume that when in fact this individual is
"caught" that it won't be used for maximum political/electoral
effect...

OBL is shrub's "ace in the hole" and they may use it prior to the
next selections. Unfortunately, I think they'd rather declare
martial law after another "staged event" than "capture" OBL.

9. 4th....
we have to assume that Binny's lawyer will have a pretty tough time responding to the prosecution when they cue up The Shiek claiming responsibility for blowing people up

a more civilized America than the one in which we actually live.

6. OBL is the poster boy for international terrorism
Therefore his trial should be international.

7. For 9-11, he should be tried in NYC,
preferably by a state court.

19. Can not be tried in the US... as he's not a US citizen...

US laws apply to US citizens... OBL would have to be tried by an international body.

8. So what SHOULD Dean say/have said?
I wish he had supported the Hague. What do YOU think?

And do you support the Death penalty NOW for Osama (do you believe he is guilty even BEFORE a trial - whether or not a trial happens)? In other words: do you already believe he is guilty of crimes for which death is the best penalty?

al qaeda

Ain't never gonna' catch obl, even if he's alive, so it seems like a moot point to me

12. If OBL is caught
If we capture Osama Bin Laden, he should probably get the nod to replace George Stephanopolous(sp?) on THIS WEEK.

He could toss questions about the Chicago Cubs to George Will.

17. Didn't dean say yesterday that he didn't care?
along with a reference that he wasn't sure Osama was guilty of 9/11 and should be tried in a court of law, now he says "he thinks the death penalty is appropriate for Osama and that Osama should be handled as bush has said Saddam will be handled."

How did it go from he wasn't sure Osama was guilty of 9/11 to he thinks the death penalty is appropriate for Osama and that Osama should be handled as bush has said Saddam will be handled?

I'd like to know what dean would do himself now, as opposed to what he said yesterday, not just to say he'd do whatever bush wants done with Osama. Is that too much to ask? I think this is a question for all the candidates.

Food for thought from….“JAFO”

20. Bush has said Saddam will get a fair trial that can "stand up to
international scrutiny."

That's what Bin Laden should get as well.

The only difference is that Dean would wait for the verdict before throwing the switch.

23. Depends who catches him
If we catch him the Hague or Guantanimo or trial in US are all possibilities. While killing him might be a feelgood solution, I think the US would rather interogate him first.

Personally, I don't care OBL deserves whatever fate awaits him.
