Al Gore and the Oscars
I am sure this has been discussed but does anyone think that Gore would announce his candidacy, if he is going to run, during his acceptance speech (assuming he wins an Oscar)?

What do you think would be the negative/positive effects of such an announcement?

Personally, I think it may be a bit too dramatic and could hurt both his candidacy and his cause. However, it would be dramatic and definitely something to see.

2. I tend to agree. But...
if he did, how do you think the public would receive it?

13. It would look to crass and calculated....
Plus I think the mass public, maybe not us lefties, reacts negatively to the mixing of politics and entertainment. Even some very liberal people I know were very disturbed by Michael Moore's Oscar bombast. (I, for the record, was jumping up and down on the couch cheering!)

3. Yes, the film is nominated.
But he isn't. The Academy's rules state that the producer and the director of the film will receive Oscars. Since Gore is neither, the best you'll see of Gore is him applauding in the audience or being brought on stage with the producer and director.

6. I heard that they allow two people go up and one speak.
I think he's aloud if he's one of the two.

8. It would be a little bit more awkward if the award is for more than just him.
(May want to edit "aloud", :))

9. Not Entirely True....
I heard that the Director, Guggenheim, is allowed to bring someone up to the podium with him, and he's going to allow Gore to come up if the movie wins.

Further, the rules allow for 1 person to make the acceptance speech from the podium, and supposedly, Mr. Guggenheim is going to allow Mr. Gore to make the acceptance speech if the film wins.

This is what I had read, so we'll have to see what happens. Regardless, at this point, I'd say the chances of Mr. Gore making any sort of announcement on Sunday are ZERO. If he's going to run, it won't be until at least mid-summer.

is that the producer will allow Gore to be the one to speak in accepting the Oscar.

11. No, because he's not even nominated.
The Film and whomever it was that produced/directed it are nominated, not President Gore.

(If) When it wins, he may be on the stage with him, but I doubt that he'll get the majority of the mic time.

12. He'd only have a minute or so for the speech
I don't think that's quite enough time for him to announce his candidacy for president.

14. Nah. I think the real fun is afterwards, listening to the wingers whining
about Al Gore's movie winning an Oscar.

What I also want to see is the HUGE ovation Al will get when he goes up to the podium. That'll give the wingers a headache for DAYS!

16. Absolutely NOT....
He would never step on the message of the climate crisis, or distract from the well-earned accolades for the film by doing that. It would be seen as a stunt, and would make it appear that the movie was just a set-up for a presidential run.

19. No, very negative, WAY too soon.
He needs to seperate "the movement" from "the candidate" announcing at the Oscars would connect them forever and the movie would then be seen as nothing more than a campaign film.

Right now he has the luxury of running, without having to deal with all the crap, which is what he has been doing.

He also CAN'T announce before the summer concerts on climate change. If he becomes an official "candidate" the concerts take on a whole different meaning. However, as long as he remains an unofficial candidate, the concerts are what the concerts are, just concerts for change.

A few months after the concerts (in, say, September...) he is safe to announce free from all the encumbrances and he effectively disconnects "the movement" from "the candidate"
