Will the '08 Vice Presidential nominee be a Senator?
Edited on Thu Feb-22-07 02:41 AM by liberalpragmatist
It's very, very likely that the '08 nominee will be a senator or former senator. (Govs. Richardson and Vilsack have an outside shot.)

So will the running mate also be from the Senate? 2004 featured 2 senators, after all.

Moreover, here's an interesting statistic: EVERY Democratic ticket since 1944, except for 1984, has had a senator - not just a senator, but an incumbent senator - as the running mate. (Although in 1972, Sen. Tom Eagleton was dropped from the ticket and replaced with Peace Corps administrator Sargent Shriver.) And even the 1984 running mate (Geraldine Ferraro) was a congresswoman.

Seriously - take a look:

1944: SEN. Harry Truman (Missouri)
1948: SEN. Alben Barkley (Ky.)
1952: SEN. John Sparkman (Ala.)
1956: SEN. Estes Kefauver (Tenn.)
1960: SEN. Lyndon Johnson (Tex.)
1964: SEN. Hubert Humphrey (Minn.)
1968: SEN. Edmund Muskie (Maine)
1972: SEN. Tom Eagleton (Mo.) * replaced by R. Sargent Shriver
1976: SEN. Walter Mondale (Minn.)
1984: Rep. Geraldine Ferraro (N.Y.)
1988: SEN. Lloyd Bentsen (Tex.)
1992: SEN. Al Gore (Tenn.)
2000: SEN. Joe Lieberman (Conn.)
2004: SEN. John Edwards (N.C.)

The GOP nominates senators for Vice President often, but not as frequently (Nixon, Henry Cabot Lodge, Bob Dole, Dan Quayle). They seem to also like putting people on the ticket who served in the House and in the cabinet (GHW Bush, Jack Kemp, Dick Cheney) and an occasional governor (Earl Warren, Spiro Agnew) or congressman (William Miller).

So if the next Democratic running mate is also a senator who do you see it being?

1. Will it be sunny next July 4th?
Will it snow next Christmas?
If I meet the love of my life and have children with her, what color eyes will they have? How old will I be when I die, and more to the point at the moment, when will I officially count as bald, and have to start shaving my head?
Who will win the World Series next year? How about the All Star Game? What about the question America's losing sleep over this fine night: how long will Brittney stay in rehab this time?

3. It will be a General....
Interesting Parallels with election of 1952!

No incumbent Prez or VP running (Truman chose not to run)
Dissatisfied with unpopular war (Korean vs. Iraq)
Retired General runs and win taking back the White House from the opposing party.
He goes to Korea and ends it.

Perfect!
