Welcome to McCain's flip-flop express

Welcome to McCain's flip-flop express

By Dick Polman

The Philadelphia Inquirer

...
Space does not permit a full recitation of his flip-flops, so here's a modest sampling:

McCain used to dismiss Jerry Falwell as an "agent of intolerance," but tomorrow he will trek to a Florida religious convention to woo the guy.

McCain, until recently, was pushing for a reform law that would require conservative groups to reveal their financial donors. But, after fielding protests from evangelical Christians and antiabortion activists, McCain decided last month to strip out the provision.

McCain in 2000 assailed Bush's proposed tax cuts as a sop to the rich, and a year later, with Bush in office, he voted against those cuts, declaring that "the benefits go to the most fortunate among us, at the expense of middle-class Americans." But a year ago, he switched sides and voted to extend tax cuts for the wealthy.

McCain in 1999 said that, "even in the long term," he would not support the repeal of Roe v. Wade because "thousands of young American women would be performing illegal and dangerous operations." But last November he said that he now favored repeal because "I don't believe the Supreme Court should be legislating in the way that they did on Roe v. Wade."

McCain in 2000 was incensed when a pair of Texas businessmen, Sam and Charley Wyly, bankrolled some Bush-friendly TV ads that distorted McCain's record. McCain declared at the time that their "dirty money" did not belong in national politics. But last year, McCain decided that their dirty money belonged in his campaign; he took $20,000 and allowed them to chair a McCain fund-raiser. (McCain later had to give back the money, because, it turns out, his new friends are reportedly under federal investigation.)

McCain, who has long deplored negative politics, defended John Kerry in 2004 when the Democratic candidate's war record was being impugned by the Swift Boaters. But today, one of McCain's top advisers is GOP hardball specialist Terry Nelson, who has worked as a consultant with one of the principal Swift Boaters. Nelson also produced the notorious `06 TV ad that implied, in the Tennessee Senate race, that the black Democratic candidate cavorted with white women.

McCain has voted against a federal constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, but last fall, regarding his own state, he supported an Arizona referendum that would have banned gay marriage.

McCain in 2006 suggested that creationism was not a fit topic for the schoolroom: "I respect those who think the world was created in seven days. Should it be taught as a science class? Probably not." But he suggested the opposite in 2005 ("all points of view should be presented"), and next Friday he is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at a confab sponsored by the Discovery Institute, a prominent creationism advocacy group.

7. Great definition of a politician
"...A supposedly honorable man turned into a whore for votes..."
Thats about it all right, with the addition of "or woman" between "man" and "turned."

30. Shameonyou! Whores are at least honest about their work.
They are selling a commodity with full disclosure up front. You degrade the name of (sexual) prostitution. McCain is an unprincipled liar.

I like the sound of that meme!

What a shill...he'll apparently do ANYTHING to grab support. Courage? Right, John-boy.

5. Man, these are TERRIFIC buzz phrases! "Weathervane mccain"!!!
And the FLIP-FLOP EXPRESS!!!

I hope they hand out truckloads of those cheap plastic/rubber beach sandals at the Democratic Convention. Whether or not it's mccain, whoever's the standard-bearer will UNDOUBTEDLY earn the flip-flop title. All three of the "biggies" are beset with this in their track records, already.

9. I can't take credit for the 'Weathervane McCain' meme...
I first heard it from Paul Begala, on a radio interview a couple of months ago. But it stuck with me because it had all the elements of a winner. When you add that Flip-Flop Express part to it, it does start to take on a life of it's own, doesn't it?

Kudos to Mr. Begala or whomever before him who coined that phrase - it fits the bill perfectly.

4. This guy panders with the worst of them
I don't know if his age is getting to him or what but fortunately I think it will cost him the nomination. This kind of flip flopping is blatent and I'm kind of surprised he's being so open with it, he never struck me as being that stupid.

28. This is his last chance at the big one....
he's salivated over the Presidency for decades but the GOP always found some other, more pliable dupe to push ahead of him. His "maverick" label DID suit him earlier in his political career. He didn't toe the party line and it always cost him what he coveted the most.
At 72 he sees this as his last chance and it appears he's pulling out all the stops on his character, honesty and integrity to achieve it. There is no bar so low that John McCain cannot stoop beneath it from now until the GOP crowns their nominee for 2008. He's completely sold his soul to the GOP devil. He is THE GOPanderer. :puke:

12. The current Republican power structure
and the Devil made him do it. The wingnuts control the Republican primaries, and McCain has chosen to dance with the fundamentalist devils than to stand on principle. He's not smart enough to understand he sealed his own demise with his pandering to fanatics.
Look for the big money backers to withhold funds. They know the Bush junta damaged the GOP brand, and it will take some time and a huge propaganda effort to recover. All their candidates are vulnerable because of Bush ass kissing and ties to weird religious fanatics.

They used the "flip-flop" meme ad nauseam on Kerry. Now it's time for them to get a taste of their own medicine.

24. I'm glad you said that, because
that's how I really feel to, I almost didn't want to say hate, but F-it, McCain called Jerry Falwell & his ilk "agents of intolerance" years ago, now, he gives a commencement speech at Falwell's Liberty University, & also courts the religious rights vote...

John McCain is a BASTARD of the highest order, & I HATE him with a passion...

20. What motivates him?...
It is an awful business when a person cannot be honest about the important issues of life. McCain, a war, hero has diminished himself as a poor pandering fool. What obligation drives him to this? Is it money or mental illness?

21. Take a good look, folks. This is what the quest for power above `
all else -- and for no other reason than for the power itself -- looks like. It's a shame and a disgrace, not pretty at all to look at. But BOY! has McCain earned it. A once proud and dignified former POW reduced to blubbering, pandering idiot. That photo of him awkwardly hugging Bush, with his face in Bush's armpit, becomes more and more apropos.

Very, very sad. And increasingly repulsive.

22. McBush 08
How pathetic is this man, John McBush. I guess he figures that his only chance to get W's remaining war chest is by "morphing" into the man. McBush is through. W likes keeping him around, however, as he is keeping the seat warm for JB008 (Jeb Bush 2008).
PS. I did not coin the name, "McBush." It really says it all, doesn't it? I wish I could take credit for it. When referring to this man, I request that everyone take the pledge with me to forever call him, "McBush."

29. Thank you for this very important article and thread, Mass.
I am kicking and recommending this for the Greatest Page.

Everyone at the DU needs to read the article by Dick Polman, and then, afterwards, pass it along to everyone they know and ask them to also pass it along.

Straight talk, mi culo.

31. No, no, no! Listen to the MSM, people! He's not a flip-flopper. He's a "maverick!"
"Flip-flop" shall only be applied to Democrats.

All of his little sell-outs are for the primary purposes of solidifying the Republican Idiot Base under him and getting George W. Bush's donor list. Expect the Falwells and Dobsons of the United States to begin extoling the virtues of John McCain, a good Christian man, a man of God, and man of "moral values." This coupled with McCain's new agenda to serve the interests of the wealthy, he will soon be swimming in cash and idiot love. He will be no small force to reckon with.
