The prosaic version of this sentiment is contained in
this post from yesterday, as a response to
this post, titled "Why are Americans so docile?". Several people indicated that my response should be posted as it's own thread and I hesitated, rightly thinking it suicide. What follows hopefully strikes a non-fatal balance for more general consumption:
America invaded Iraq,
but it came off the tracks
when we realized there were no nukes
Bush had lied
and so many had died
and we blamed it on the Repukes
-
But that was 2003,
And woe is me
We've still got troops over there!
Why is that?
Ever think about that?
Why are we still in this sordid affair?
-
I'll tell you why
Grab a hankie, you'll cry
The truth is unvarnished, immodest
The reason we're still
Rubes in this shill
Is so few come out to protest!
-
Have you wondered "Why for
do more protest this war
in other countries than in the States?"
'Cause we hate it as much
As they do and as such
You'd expect similar rates."
-
Oh we make phone calls
And write on the walls
Of electronic message boards
But to little effect
And we get little respect
Sign my e-petition and I'll sign YOURS!
-
You can blog and blog
About wag the dog
About big business' oil teats
The cash drills keep boring
Their operators snoring
Because we are not on the streets
-
But if on a corner you stand
With sign in hand
People will see your outrage
Not just the ones who agree
Because they're already
The ones who read your on-line message
-
No one goes on-line
To read what they find
To be the opposite of what they think
We all cluster, you know
With friends who also
Know we're right (raise your glasses), TINK-TINK!
-
This is not to eschew
Places like DU
It's a reminder and a serious one
That we've got a fight to fight
And we fight it, all right
But what we mostly do here is have fun
-
We argue and comment
And wail, sometimes vomit
At the predicament we have been in
But if it's 'lectronic,
It's mostly a tonic
for ourselves but won't much help our men
-
We need to be seen
On the TV screen
So the world knows that we exist
Others need to see
On their evening's TV
That so many of us are well-pissed
-
A nation outraged
A nation self-caged
Gilded sand-box of pontification
But I fear it does little
And at most only whittles
At the problems that grow in our nation
-
And that Free Speech Zone
That we all bemoan?
Is both imposed and self-imposed
When we chew the fat
about this and that
Instead of protesting, on the streets, in droves!
-
If you fear we're on tracks
For another attack
Please remember just one thing:
Blogs are fine
And web-posts, divine
But they pale to what protests bring

* No, it's not technically a limerick.
** Any flames, and unfortunately my pessimism expects there will be a few especially-indignant ones, should also be posted in rhyming form so as to be abusive
and poignantly-germane.
