Will Bushco Try To Make Gays The Willie Horton Of Election 2004?
I just saw a report on MSNBC that * will support a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage....I doubt it will ever get out of Congress and I seriously doubt it will garner the necessary three fourths support from the state legislatures but it will make for an interesting campaign issue...

We need to get out early on this issue and frame the issue and debate in a a way that's most beneficial to us....

Any suggestions...

As an editorial point they shouldn't have given Chimpy a marriage license so the gene pool could have ended with him....

1. That is all they got
They can't run on peace and democracy in Iraq. They can't run on capturing bin Laden. They can't run on the economy.

All they have is hatred of gays. That's it.

3. Playing
to base prejudices (the repubs). Dems should not be afraid to stand against such garbage.

12. True. It is the civil rights struggle of our era. And,
it should be portrayed as such by the Dems.

4. But Its a Big One
Polls consistently shown that the majority are opposed to GM though they want fair treatment.

If the economy and war problems get worse, it won't matter, but if GW(easel)B can keep it close (he has not yet begun to fight), it may/will keep him in office.

I hope the Mass legistature crushes the issue for now(i don't know how but they may be able to)

5. I think it might just get out of Congress.
I'm not as sanguine about its chances as you are.

I'd hit hard on the discriminatory aspect of this amendment. This amendment is catering to homophobia. Nothing more than that.

Force the supporters of this amendment to justify this. Force them to explain why this amendment is needed. DOMA is still the law of the land. 38 states have their own versions of DOMA.

This amendment would permanently relegate gay and lesbian Americans to second class status. Put the debate in personal terms. Most people in this country knows a gay or lesbian person. They're family members, friends. Force the supporters of this amendment to explain why they are willing to discriminate against the gay family members, the gay friends. The American people, by and large, are fair. I think that they don't want to see discrimination and intolerance.

IMO, anyway.

8. Sure
They try to turn every election into a referendum on so-called "cultural" and "character" issues. Policy concerns take a bit of thought and explaining, these issues provoke instinctual reaction, electoral gold for Repub troglodytes.

Coming up in June -- the Supreme Court's Newdow ruling. God AND Flag. Yoiks!

9. The flip side: Will the Dem nominee do a Sister Souljah on gays?
Nothing like exploiting fear and bigotry!

I can't hardly wait to see how this plays out.

10. They already have
and the Democrats are allowing the extreme right to frame the debate (once again). It looks like they are quite willing to stab their gay constituents in the back to appeal to the fundie crowd who are NEVER going to vote for them anyway. Watching the "opposition" fall for the same traps over and over and constantly using the same failed strategy has really got me wondering, do they really want to win? I've got to admit if they lose my vote in November they are in serious trouble, I want the regime out as much as anyone.
