Gilmore says conservatism will help him win GOP nod
"I am the Reagan conservative," Gilmore told the annual meeting of the Virginia Capitol Correspondents Association, an organization of journalists who cover the state Capitol. Many covered Gilmore during his tumultuous term as governor, from 1998 to 2002.

While he acknowledged he got into the race late, "it is very doable," he said.

Asked if President Bush would be a liability to Republicans in 2008, Gilmore said Republicans should run on their own record. Asked if he could carry Virginia, Gilmore answered simply, "Yes."

He left office unpopular after fighting with fellow Republicans in the Virginia Senate. He also left with mounting budget deficits that some blamed on his campaign promise to repeal the personal-property tax on cars and trucks. The Senate halted that repeal after it cost the state treasury $950 million, about 70 percent of the total repeal.

Gilmore said the budget was "flush" and there was money to repeal the tax.

1. Funny how many "raygun conservatives" there are
I don't hear a single one of these lying douchbags calling themselves a GHW Bush conservative or a shrub conservative. Gilmore is one POS I'd love to see win the republic primary, he'd get crushed by any Dem nominee IMO.

3. In 2000 I was thinking the same thing about *my* idiot governor. Now guess where I live.
The thing about wishing that the Republicans would nominate their worst possible candidate is that sometimes they do.

doesn't care about deficits, forgets about priests, nuns and children he ordered to their deaths and thinks ketchup is a vegetable. A reagan conservative is a monster just like any other kind of fucking conservative. gilmore you are an idiot, but please pardon my redundancy.

Yeah, please anyone running for office, please tell me you are a conservative, boy that'll make my mind up real fast.

4. This is the man who
ran almost solely on a platform of "No Car Tax!" and got elected as governor of Virginia. :puke: However, his "wonderful" ( :sarcasm: ) no car tax plan screwed over our economy pretty severely, and this red state elected a Democratic governor to clean up his mess. Mark Warner did a pretty good job, IMO, but that doesn't change the fact that Gilmore is an irresponsible idiot. Republican or no, "Reagan conservative" or no, I doubt very much he'll make it anywhere near the White House if most Virginians have anything to say about it. (I would love for him to get the GOP nomination, though...although for similar reasons, I doubt that will happen.)

P.S. Sorry for inflicting Jim Gilmore on you guys...but please don't hate us! We also elected Jim Webb, so that's got to count for something, right? ;)

5. Funny
Bill Clinton lost the Arkansas governorship in 1980 after he fulfilled a pledge to increase car taxes. Two years later he was back in the seat for good. Jim Webb is an outstanding Senator. I was in the Navy when he was a SECDEF and I thought he was a pain in the ass, but there was no doubt about where the boss stood and what he wanted. I lived in Chesapeake, way back in the 60's, thoroughly enjoyed my short time in Virginia.

6. Note the last line
Gilmore thinks that the NO CAR TAX is the only issue that matters.

The Va. Republicans can't figure out how to get a bill passed that doesn't totally screw them over as they don't want to raise taxes but everyone wants the roads fixed. Very funny to watch.

8. It is not restricted to Virginians -
Californians recalled Davis because of an increase in the 'car tax'. It was an automatic rate increase when State government income fell below a fixed percentage - Wilson - rethug governor signed it into law. Problem is THAT increased tax is a huge income source for COUNTY governments...so now our schools suffer, local street maintenance, police & fire departments, etc. Wilson was also the head cheer leader for utility deregulation, sending an engraved invitation to enron to rip off Californians.

7. He's right you know, he's very much like Reagan...
he wrecked this state for good in terms of being able to pay for any major infrastructural expenses LIKE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. He convinced every yahoo in this state that you can squeeze blood out of a turnip while having your cake and eating it too.

Just get rid of the WASTE, and you'll be rolling in piles of money, that was the Reagan mantra wasn't it? :eyes:

9. gilmore is running for vice president
By throwing his hat in the presidential ring, he's hoping to position himself as the "right wing" balance to a repub presidential candidate such as Guiliani or even McCain who characterizes himself as appealing to "moderates". All smoke and mirrors, of course.

10. Dark horses with darker records
it is amazing that at a time when the GOP could probably use a "clean" fresh start every new and smaller name keeps getting paired to a lousy record, corruption or general looniness. The GOP is only getting an easy time with its bedroom partners in the media. There is no hope on the horizon or below it. Failed governors that might not win their own states. People anathema to the conservatives. People who have gutted themselves to achieve a meaningless pole position. People who probably can't win a primary without massive fraud and kingpin support. People who need half a billion dollars somewhere not locked up in Bush's vault.

Maybe at this point, on purpose, Jeb Bush IS the most attractive GOP candidate(relatively), but what a soul cringing thing that must be for their party faithful.
