Something Very Wrong

Something Very Wrong
By Nancy Greggs

THERE'S SOMETHING VERY WRONG WHEN …

… citizens of a united country are encouraged by their government to see each other as enemies.

… a voter has to wonder whether his vote was counted accurately, or even counted at all.

… a president dismisses the counsel of experienced advisors, and the will of the majority of the people, and pursues his own course of action - even when his course has been proven wrong time and again.

… elected representatives put their loyalty to their party above the best interests of those who they have sworn to serve.

… billions of taxpayers’ dollars go missing in ‘the fog of war’, and no one even bothers to ask where the money has gone.

… an entire American city is destroyed by natural disaster, and the government considers the city, and its people, ‘expendable’.

… elected representatives allow the president to over-step the boundaries of his office and circumvent the law, without speaking up against either.

… so-called Christian leaders encourage their flock to support not only the mindless violence of war, but the mindless violence of torture.

… hard-working Americans watch their jobs outsourced to cheaper labor markets, as their government hands out tax-breaks to the corporations that do so.

… US companies go bankrupt due to lack of operating funds, while the CEO of that company walks away with millions.

… US companies cannot fulfill their pension obligations to workers, but can still afford to fulfill the Golden Parachute provisions promised to upper management.

… American citizens have to work a year to make the same salary the CEO of the company that employs them makes in one day.

… illegal immigrants are considered criminals for working in the US, while the US companies that illegally employ them are not.

… billions of dollars for a war that is accomplishing nothing is considered a wise investment, but funding health care for US citizens is considered too costly to discuss.

… the rumor-mill at the office water-cooler is a more reliable news source than the print media, TV and radio ‘news’ shows – combined.

… The War on Christmas gets coverage, while the war on citizens’ rights and freedoms gets none.

… teenagers get ‘visits’ from the FBI based on their library book choices, but authors who espouse the idea that “McVeigh should have bombed the NY Times building and its employees” are free to speak on nationally-broadcasted TV/radio shows without interference.

… US citizens have to read newspapers published in foreign countries to find out the truth of what’s happening in their own country.

… the TV news media spends days covering the escapades of a ‘runaway bride’, but dismisses weeks of post-2004 election fraud hearings in Ohio courtrooms as ‘internet rumors gone amok’.

… satirical comedy shows like The Daily Show and the Colbert Report are considered by audiences to be ‘the real news’, while so-called ‘legitimate’ news shows are considered to be laughable at best.

… an American citizen has to post all of the above truths on a website, because her own government refuses to recognize them, no less address them.

There's something terribly wrong ...

1. There's something very right when talented writers enter posts
as you just have and always do, Nance, framing questions like those.

I hear a bit of Thomas Paine in those questions, and that's definitely a good thing to be hearing these days.

Kudos, many cheers, and a thank you.

9. I am only a mirror ...
... reflecting what I see here on DU, and what I hear from my fellow citizens, every day.

I keep wondering how we, as a nation, have sunk so low -- and then I read the posts here, and realize that we, as a nation, will not allow this to stand.

There is a fight to be fought ... and there are Americans willing to fight that battle.

I know it will take time, but I believe that in the end, we are invincible - unfortunately, not because of our present government, but in spite of it!

I've always felt that same invincibility for our country as well for the very same reasons. With the grace of God, we will see a new nation birthed from this tragic moment in our history.

63. You are so right - we here on DU are the REAL America.
And the questions we ask and the issues we raise are what the rest of America is thinking, even if they aren't yet able to articulate it.

Re >>I keep wondering how we, as a nation, have sunk so low -- and then I read the posts here, and realize that we, as a nation, will not allow this to stand.<<

No, we won't allow it to stand because we have never lost our vision of what America is, and was, and will be again.

14. You`re right. Something is very wrong.
The most solid indicator of how bad things have gotten in this country is the invasion of Iraq. Almost without question, Americans allowed their government to go on a killing rampage...in their name...by merely substituting one name for another, Saddam for Osama.

We renamed French fries, gave up our rights, willingly slaughtered innocents, oversaw the ruination of our good name and charged the whole damn thing to our grandchildren. We even accepted Bush`s shallow suggestion that sacrifice at home wasn`t necessary during a time of war. As told, we simply grabbed our tax cuts and went shopping.

Maybe not today and maybe not tomorrow, but some day historians will have some unkind words for this very dark chapter in our history.

15. ouch. the truth hurts
I can find nothing to argue with here, Nance.

I would add there's something very wrong when a nation forces a third of its people to go without adequate health insurance, while others have the luxury of regular doctors and dentists. (Or however you prefer to say that).

You summed it up well. The implications are staggering. Almost too much to comprehend. But people need to try to face the big picture.

..when one of the country's leading financial newspapers, the WSJ (a well-known ultra-right propaganda machine), can plaster a headline in the middle of all of this chaos like yesterday's beauty: "How Six Years of War Didn't Strain Economy".

22. Nancy Greggs reading minds again
I just posted this on another thread about Pelosi abusing her power as Speaker.
It all starts with false reports about airplanes. Remember the Clinton hair cut that shut down an airport for half a day. That story turned out to be corporate media bullshit.
The media that traditionally made politicians accountable has for the last few years been a propaganda tool of the Republican Party. Pox (deliberate typo) News is just a smoke screen for Pravda, TAAS and Izvestia now known as America's corporate media. They went from the Fourth Estate to a Fifth Column.
The Soviets knew their news was propaganda. That's one of the reasons the government lost popular support and collapsed.
With each passing day more people turn to Internet blogs for information and the ability to question what is being presented as information regarding how we are governed.
I would suggest when these false stories or half truths appear in print or on the air, question the source. Make them talk about it, and ask them who is responsible for validating information.

I think the vast majority of people have a conscience. I'm holding on the belief that it's a minority who are willing to sell their soul for their 10th jet or 5th home. It's possible only those who perpetrate atrocities will perish. Let's hope.

...regulatory agencies are flooded with industry hacks placed in charge of monitoring their former employers. Said hacks bend scientific findings, toe ideological lines, and avoid penalizing industry and, when caught, return within minutes to their former employers.

68. In 1777..
Edited on Wed Feb-07-07 12:23 AM by HappyWeasel
"The Evil Empire" was a king across a deep blue void

In 1937-
"The Evil Empire" was a colemn of tanks that swept across the landscape of the land of our fathers.

In 1957...
"The Evil Empire" was a powerful and taunting red menace from a vast cold wasteland

In 1977- "The Evil Empire" was a vast and mythical place that spanned an entire galaxy, yet was housed within our heads.

In 2007, "The Evil Empire" is in our back yard.

The only problem with this evil empire is that it is comprised of our family and friends who only claim to want to help us have communion with our fathers and with our wish to live a safe and happy life. That's why this entity is a virus. It cannot survive on its own. In order to survive, it has taken hosts that are invaluable to us all.

47. Yup Nance beautifully crafted as ever. . .
Still in my silly deluded way, thinking that the cup may be still half full.

Here is my first "procreative" effort online (not porn.)

I commented with this to a cynical article on the Huff Post earlier today about the astronaut lunacy.

The article was entitled "Anything is Possible."

"We have perhaps totally misplaced our moral compass.

Under valuing basic human kindness and love and tolerance in this culture which so often rewards selfishness and greed, and reveres money regardless of whether it's acquired through ill gotten means perhaps has cost us, at least temporarily, our collective soul.

I read something on a spiritual site that resonated profoundly. It said that the only way truth and justice will be restored, or perhaps manifest truly for the first time in our recorded history, would be through massive shift in collective consciouness coupled with prayer.

Though I've been posting spiritual/political and sometimes humorous stuff on activist boards for years, and though I hadn't started suggesting prayer except in a general sense until about four months ago, here goes.

Here is a brief excerpt from my most recent posting. . .

". . . Once again, I'm deeply compelled to put forth an affirmation in hopes of neutralizing oppressive collective presumed powerlessness. Silly me.

Anything is possible. . .? You bet.

""I procreate" with spirit that all those leaders who don't hold peace and love of the greater good for ALL in their hearts as their absolute top priority and soul's urge, be exposed and stripped of all their power-PRONTO."

"Rinse and repeat."

We, the people, are generally sick tired of living in a country that has morphed into being of the corporations, for the corporations, and by the corporations, benefiting ONLY the falsely presumed "who's who of the chosen few" and masquerading as a Democracy with extremely compromised accountability in our elections.

Let's fix it with our hearts AND minds or at least try and see what happens."

Let's just consider saying the prayer and have a "lively experiment" in spiritual procreation. It won't take but a moment. It truly is worth a shot.

If what we hold in our hearts and minds is not of consequence, then we have truly lost our very humanity. That possibility is one I'll never accept. . ."

Please feel free to modify it as you see fit and consider passing it on if spirit moves you to do so."

Thanks again Nance and best.

64. What Would Any National Leader of a Previous generation do?
I am just aghast but hardly know where to start.
Thank you.

but the biggest factor that is going on here is this statement,
… US citizens have to read newspapers published in foreign countries to find out the truth of what’s happening in their own country.

It is so beyond outrageous!

of Earth have succumbed to the heinous symptoms from the inside out.

We all pray for the cure, but if we knew it, the plague would have already been made into a disease no worse than the common cold.

Like anybody who faces extinction from an epic flood, we must get down to business. Instead of assessing the death that this terrible holocaust has caused, we must start looking for a cure.

71. Great post. How depressingly true.
I rail against Bush at work, and my co-workers say I'm entertaining. And I help edit a daily newspaper. >sigh< People who should know better still don't get it. DU always has, though. I'm so grateful for this site and its members.

78. Well !
I can see one politics regime is applied on all countries from Egypt to USA
maybe SOme of americans considered odd to hear that
But this is the reality maybe you have opposite parties , sometimes we have never had
But you still not able to get your real freedom and democracy
While most of the americans whinning and screaming from the Bush administration
Bush continue in his agenda and aims as there s no one in USA but Bush and his axis of evil plan !

You are mentioning natural disaster .... have you ever wonder why you lately getting this kind of curse ?
Why dozen of americans are dying ? while Bush careless about them exactly as when he ordered his troop to bomb thousand of innocent in iraq and he careless about whom could die
children woman ,, innocent people ..

You are treated by Bush exactly as the iraqi people actually he careless about anyone

He has his own agenda and fighting to acheive it regardless whom might die and what could happen
and what is the consequence of his plan ...

I truely dont hate bush but I cant respect a person who never fullfiled what he says .

He promised democracy while he cant even applied it on his country !

Anyway if the most powerful country is having all this problems so I shouldnt be sad when I see people in egyptian jail get sodomized while Bush is clapping his hands to mubarak
Because I bet that is the normal daily routine torture in gantanamo !

So yes everything is terribly wrong .
