Clark supporters should turn off the TV, push back from the computers, take a deep breath, and be very proud of yourselves for your dedication and hope. You're patriots, and the sun will rise tomorrow to reveal what it will reveal. We'll be here for you.

Some movie about Reagan getting shot, and Al Haig going schizo.

7. Why haven't I watched C-SPAN all along?
I was so frustrated with Jeff Gangrene's CNN commentary, "Clark sucks, he should drop out" talking over Gert and then I thought...maybe I'll try C-SPAN?

And C-SPAN SHOWED THE WHOLE THING w/o the stupid PUNDITS. I can't believe I haven't been watching it the whole time.

9. For a while
some of the old idealism I used to feel as a kid was coming back.

The more I saw Clark, the more I believed what some of the early supporters said:

Wes Clark will be the kind of President you were promised as a kid.

back to cynicism, I guess.............

95. I never felt any idealism as a kid
I've been a hardcore cynic for as long as I can remember. Wes Clark is the only one to have ever brought out the idealism in me.

I'll get drunk, have a good cry, then it's back to cynicism for me.

I never gave a dollar before Clark
I never made calls before Clark
I never wrote letters before Clark
I never gave time before Clark

I ALWAYS voted Democratic in the GE. But never felt inspired and charged. Back to that feeling I guess.

Clark is the ONLY candidate in my lifetime that I BELIEVED in.

I haven't even seriously considered a second. This is so painfull.

201. Your post sums it up...
I couldn't have said it any more accurately, this is the first candidate I've ever given money to, the only one I've ever written letters to other politicians and the only one I've plastered on my car and front yard.
It was nice to feel the way I've felt the past few months, the sense of hope and security was refreshing. After eight years of peace and prosperity being wiped away in just a short time under the chimp, I could genuinely feel the dark clouds parting for a ray of sunshine when Wesley Clark took the oath of office over this great country. It still hasn't really set in yet, and I'm still wearing my CLARK 04 T-shirt as I'm typing this, but I believe that a little something that Clark brought to this campaign will be built upon and hopefully, someday my children will reap the benefits of his vision for America, because with the Republican'ts in charge, it won't be better any time soon...
P.S. I'm still punching my ballot for the General on March 2, since he's still on my ballot here in California. It'll just make me feel better...

171. Sorry. I would have been fine with a Clark Presidency.
I think that once a war hero got the momentum, a lot of the undecideds stopped looking around for another war hero. Perhaps he can be in the new administration and run again later. I suspect that he and Edwards were pulling from each other. If it had just been one of them, that one would have done great in Tennessee.

24. I felt disillusioned
When Dean got the Gore endoresment. I felt down when Clark slipped from a good 2nd in NH to a narrow 3rd. It's been a roller coaster since then. Polls showed we were slipping in TN but I held out that we could pull in a surpising 2nd and for a brief time I thought we had it.

The rumor mill started about Clark dropping out early this evening a I call Bullshit on it. Saw Clark on CSPAN and while he looked like it had been a rough night- he was introduced as the next POTUS so I still had hope. I didn't stay to hear the crowd walk-thru.

After going to the offical Clark site and reading tonights speech, I'm starting to accept that Clark will not be the nominee. And at this point I feel numb.

I will certainly vote against Bush in the general election but I was so looking forward to actually voting for someone. Let us remember Wes's message.
"When you can do good, you should."

32. What this campaign has thus far taught me
It has confirmed and expanded distrust of the media and shock at its irresponsibility first gained in 2000.

It has shown me how people can be manipulated by the incredible memetic power of the 24/7/365 media. The term "sheeple," if insulting, is also accurate.

Politics is a blood sport. Politicians have lots of blood.

I have learned that intelligence and wisdom do not necessarily a President make, because the electorate is not intelligent and wise.

I have seen the power of 'mo', and felt it shake the earth.

But I can't really say I am mad, or sad, because I knew this already, though not in specific terms. I am inclined to say, 'whatever.'

I don't think that there is any sort of conspiracy; sure there are some people, but most is better explained by memetics.

If the world should end, not my fault, I tried. Forward into darkness, humanity.

Apathetic and disillusioned.

Leaning Kucinich, then solidly ABB, if Clark is out by March 9th.

35. I'm just so sad
I have admired Wesley Clark for a very long time, long before he was even in this race. To me, even if he was a Republican, I would still admire him. Back in Feb 2003, when the field was shaping up none of the candidates appealed to me as much as Wes Clark. I mean I thought they would all be great Presidents, but none of them inspired me. I kept wishing and waiting and hoping for Wes Clark to announce his candidacy. When he did, I remember I was walking on campus with my cell phone to my ear. My mom held the phone on the other end to the radio and I listened to him announce his candidacy. I was so happy, so inspired, so hopeful. I honestly thought that Wesley Clark could be the best president we've ever seen. I've just never felt this way about a candidate before, and I think it is because he WAS an outsider. He didn't talk like a politician, he didn't walk like a politican. He was just so.. genuine. *sigh*

I am obviously a bit shaken right now. I really felt Clark was the one. The one who could make a difference. I will probably not be following the race much for a while. I will drop back in every now and then to cheer on the Democrats, because we must beat Bush. But I am very upset at the process right now. And will protest the primaries.

Good Luck and Thank You to Wes Clark and his Family and all his Supporters.

Until I hear it right from the horse's mouth, and not the whore media that's been trying to predict this since 2 days after Clark got into the race, I'll still support him.

And if he does. Well, I still my cast my vote in California for Clark. Or Dean if he's still in. Or hold my nose and vote for Kerry. But I will NOT cast a vote for Edwards unless that lying scumbag actually wins the nomination. Edward's lies and his supporters have turned me off forever from that sorry sack of lying shit.

But until I see it from Clark himself, and not the lying whores at CNN, MSNBC, or Faux, I still plan to vote for Clark on March 2nd.

As for the DNC.....well, you've shown how little you care about the voters. Here's hoping that groundswell that Clark and Dean has started creates a tidal wave that sweeps the "business as usual" pink tutu democrats out, and replaces them with solid, caring Democrats that actually care for the people, and not the contributor of the month.

I'm incredibly saddened that my candidate, Wesley Clark, will be dropping out of the race, before I've even had a chance to vote for the person who won my vote this primary season.

Arrrghh... Ohio really, really needs to consider moving our Primary Date up. Again.

Well, I've seen the writing on the wall for awhile now, but I've stuck with the fella who brough me here. From here on out, I'm going with my second choice, John Edwards. It doesn't look good for my new candidate, but I'm with him. And I'd adore to see him on the ticket.

Wes Clark as Sec of Defense or State wouldn't hurt, either...

Sad, but energized by the new breed of Fightin' Democrats (thanks from the bottom of my heart for your Party Leadership, Howard Dean!!),

When I heard the news, I had to come here immediately to post my support for the Clark supporters. I know there are lots of tears tonight, and I'm sorry for that. As a Dean supporter, I found the bonding of the Clark and Dean people here to be very comforting.

I am truly surprised that Clark didn't make it. He was the one candidate I fretted about the most when I thought of who Dean might face in the primaries. I'll never know how or why things are turning out the way they are this election.. but know that I'm thinking about all of you.. and how hard you worked, and how much you hoped.

Now.. go have a beer or a hot chocolate... and take a deep breath.

168. Clark's best campaign theme was volunteerism...
and as any person who worked on uphill campaigns will tell you, the best campaigns are motivated by ideals and individuals who spend hours of their valuable time doing priceless campaign work for free! Kerry must always remember that for every volunteer stuffing another envelope..there is a vision for a better future, and for every dollar contributed by a wealthy donor..there is a voter being won over by the idealism of young, passionate volunteers.

This may not be skull and bones stuff, but it is the heart and soul of any successful democratic campaign. :toast:

92. I don't even know what to say now
I have never been involved in a campaign before, but I've felt so strongly about Wes Clark that I've been treating this as a full-time job in the campaign office for the past month or so. We have spent the past two days calling thousands of people to tell them about Clark's rally tomorrow night in Madison.

Instead, he'll be in Little Rock.

I have never met such a great, diverse group of people as these Clarkies. Our students, our staff, each and every volunteer... I think that the type of people attracted to Wes Clark are just the greatest people, and I'm afraid that our country will realize too late what we've missed out on.

I have no idea who I'm going to throw my support behind now. I know who it won't be, but it's harder to know who it will be, because nobody can compare to Wes Clark.

182. Let´s not give up hope....
I fear that a man of greatness like Wes would never know a good night of sleep again if he were to be president. An incorruptible man in an environment of corruption is something for pros...and as tragically sad as I am about Wes´s showing, I realize that his supporters (which I have been since Day One) are, as I am, idealistic and believe, like Wes, in the basic goodness of mankind. It will take more than 4 years Wesley Clark to clean-up the corruptness of this nation and I´d hate to see this brave warrior for peace caught-up in the gears of hate, greed and destruction. It would make him "kaputt" - and that we DON`T want! But...Wes for Sec. of State? Cool! A better position...Wes, we need you!
Cheer-up, fellow Clarkies! There may be light at the end of the tunnel! A better one for Wesley, at any rate...

160. Definitely not!
"really for nothing," you've got to be kidding! Clark has made excellent strides in helping to gain the whitehouse. For example: Micheal Moore, desserter, Peter Jennings...does this ring a bell, not to mention the credibility of Clark's statements about how this country is going in the wrong direction since Bush. He has the creditials to make people listen, however, he hasn't hit the political scene until now and that's a tough road. Clark really is better than politics.

Remember, he's a soldier and if taking a hit to make a point gives us the whitehouse, then he has done his job extremely well. He has done a tremendous job towards our goal and I'm sure he isn't too far away when we need him!

106. I'll leave with this song
It keeps going through my head. It expresses how I feel, somehow. It's Kate Bush, Cloudbusting:

I still dream of Algernon.
I wake up crying.
You're making rain,
And you're just in reach,
When you and sleep escape me.

You're like my yo-yo
That glowed in the dark.
What made it special
Made it dangerous,
So I bury it
And forget.

But every time it rains,
You're here in my head,
Like the sun coming out--
Ooh, I just know that something good is going to happen.
And I don't know when,
But just saying it could even make it happen.

On top of the world,
Looking over the edge,
You could see them coming.
You looked too small
In their big, black car,
To be a threat to the men in power.

I hid my yo-yo
In the garden.
I can't hide you
From the government.
Oh, God, Daddy--
I won't forget,

'Cause every time it rains,
You're here in my head,
Like the sun coming out--
Ooh, I just know that something good is going to happen.
And I don't know when,
But just saying it could even make it happen.

The sun's coming out.
Your son's coming out.

Goodnight, all. I still love Clark best. The car stays.

108. it's a sad day
i fear
i fear this will serve notice to all those heroes that might otherwise seek to lead this country - you know the ones, the ones who *should* be president rather than *want to be* president...

instead of real leaders, we get those jerkoffs who ran for student council and won... the ones who think class president is indicative of something meaningful in life...

but this is democracy. we get what we, the collective we, deserve. A great man ran for president - his challenge to the republicans helped (with Howard's) the groundwork for the democratic party's chances in the fall. Let's hope it was enough.

111. Wes Clark was a first-class candidate who made a third-rate showing...
I do not feel that this showing had to do with his agenda, which addressed the main issues on voters minds..healthcare reform, the national debt, and the catastrophic condition of our nation's security. If Al Gore had run on the agenda Clark did, he would of won by a landslide. It wasn't because of Iowa that he did poorly, I still think Clark would of done even worse had he participated in Iowa.

Clark's agenda was finely tuned to win over the votes of independents and conservative Democrats more than it was for the party's base..this is why the nominee should embrace much of this agenda for the fall. It could be argued that Clark would of been more successful running as an independent candidate for President. Although his message did not win him any primaries other than Oklahoma, it is clear that such independents and moderates are ticked at the current administration and are looking for a new outlet for such a message. The question is can we win over these people, so they are not just another swing group..but an active segment of our party's base?

Only the nominee can answer this question. Clark helped show the way, now we can follow his lead!

113. Just wanted to say how much respect I have for Clark.
I really hope to see him continuing to have a part as a leader in our party. I really look forward to seeing him as a VP or as a SOD.

I have told this story before, but let me just say for the last time, thank you Wes Clark for the nights you talked me through the start of the war on CNN. That time helped me get through the pain of watching our soldiers driving across the desert to an uncertain future and a war that should never have happened.

Don't Leave for Long Clark. You are needed in this race if we are to beat Bush.

121. so sad to hear about Gen. Clarks decision...
I'm ABB but prefer Dean or Clark. I'm hoping that Clark is not out of the picture completely because he is very amiable and able. He is indeed a gift to the democratic party. A Dean/Clark team would be my dream come true, and I think an un-stopable force, in both the primaries and the general election.

Needless to say I am in a state of shock at this point. I'm never been more disillusioned, upset, and saddened by politics and that includes Gore in '00 and campaigns that i had actually worked on as staff. But alas, life goes on, and the political train keeps moving.

What i was wondering, can someone tell me what happened with Clark and the lady who was crying during his speech. I had to drive back to my house and i missed it but i heard it mentioned.

Thanks in advance, keep the faith guys, we've formed a bond and no one can take that away from us.

147. Sorry--that was AFTER his speech
he went into the audience, but he must have seen her from the stage. I have to say, it looked to me like Wes had been crying too.

Someone also said to him, "I wish you had been in Iowa. I stood up for you" and Wes said "I wish I had been there, too. Things might be different now".

His words, his sentences, his gestures were like poetry to me.

I think it will do people a lot of good to see Clark supporters in an other than defensive stance. It took me a while to believe that so many of all these new people from out of nowhere, who came en masse, were really, true progressives. You should keep your name and be proud of it- it would do Clark honor and could help him down the road.

Cheers and, most of all, peace to you.

159. Hang in there Clark Supporters
First of all, my thoughts are with you on this day. I still don't know if it's "official" yet (I don't trust the whore-media as far as I can throw them, and I'm a big wimp), but if Gen. Clark does drop out, it will be a sad day for American politics and the Democratic Party.

Losing a campaign really really sucks, especially one you've dedicated your heart and money to. My first Democratic campaigns were in the late 80s, which were NOT very good times to be a Democrat, even in a "liberal" state like Minnesota.

But, although this battle didn't go as planned, the war's not over. You can STILL make a HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE difference: not just at the Presidential level, but at the LOCAL level, too! In fact, I'd argue it's almost more important now to focus on our state legislatures and on our US House and Senate races, and ensure we elect strong, no-apologies Democrats to congress, so that our new Democratic president can GET THE JOB DONE without having to worry about some of the knee-jerk reactionaries on the other side of the aisle.

As a lifelong pacifist, I didn't have the time of day for Wes Clark-- military men as a rule frightened me. But I've actually warmed up to General Clark over the course of these few months. I am VERY glad he's a part of this party, and I'd bet safe money that he'll be an excellent Secretary of State or Secretary of Defense. Can you imagine a General as SoD whose willing to cut some of the useless programs we still have going? Unbelieveable!!!

Best of luck to all Clark supporters in your future endeavors. And don't EVER give up the fight for our country!

You guys have all been great in your support and I'm sorry to see Clark go too. I was/am dismayed to see people and the media who maligned him signing on to the Democratic Party. He has been a wonderful asset that I think every Democrat should embrace.

I, too, believe he will find a place of leadership in our party, so it's not really goodbye...but till the next time.

And as hard as it is, supporters, if anything this will in the end energize you to fight the fight even harder and not give up. Help us win in November...we can only win with you to put Bush and this administration out of office.

He ran a decent campaign, and I am surprised and disappointed he bowed out.

It's really too bad his campaign never had a chance to catch fire, because if it did, I think he would have been unstoppable.

There will be a spot for him somewhere. And you should all be proud of what this man did, joining the race only in September.

165. In one group of caucuses in WA state
This is from my writeup of my caucus experience (I'm Kucinich all the way.) One thing that hurt his campaign is that he never came here. People tend to think that if you want their vote, you should ask them for it.

There was no regular volunteer for the Clark campaign, but I was touched that one of his supporters spoke, even though she was absolutely terrified at the prospect. She was literally shaking and almost in tears, but she did it anyway. I didn't agree with her thoughts on meeding a military 'strong leader' candidate, but I was really touched by her willingness to get up and do something she didn't like doing in support of her candidate. I met her leaving the building, and told her that Eleanor Roosevelt once said something about "You must do the thing that you fear doing," and that it was a wonderful thing for her to put down her fear of public speaking and do it anyway. She said that she was just so scared for the country that she had to do it. As messy as democracy is, ain't it wonderful?

This was the best thing that happened in our assembly of 18 caucuses.

170. I just wanted to say
and I posted to one of the very early threads, but I'll post it here too -- I'm very sad for Clark supporters tonight. You were ferocious in your support of him and believed in him very much.

I too think he got a raw deal in a lot of ways once the DNC/DLC push for Kerry started in earnest (and actually starting some time before that), and I resent that on your behalf. Clark was NOT my guy, and not going to BE my guy, but I guess I'm big on process: I want the process of picking our nominee to be straightforward, honest, fair, and for the people to actually choose the nominee (what a concept, eh?). I don't think it has been and Clark was on the receiving end of the DNC/DLC juggernaut too. Should't have been that way.

But even for those who reject this view, I'm still very sad for you, 'cause ya'll fought hard and were very loyal, and I can vividly imagine how you feel.

The only advice I can possible give is to allow yourselves to go ahead and mourn and grieve. There'll come a time for moving on beyond that (whatever that will mean for each individual), but that time isn't now.

In solidarity with some good folks who happened to be Clark supporters,

Eloriel

172. Thank you, from the bottom of my fat, bleeding heart, Eloriel!
It does hurt.

Very, very much.

Thank you for giving Clark supporters our moment to grieve. Say what you will about Clark... he did bring people to our party, and our cause. For that I love him, most of all. The people I've met... people I otherwise would have never crossed paths with. Thank You, General Clark.

And he didn't support that damned IWR. Dammit.

:-(

Solidarity, after our brief moment of grief,
Jennifer

speech graciously praising the people he knows did NOT serve the country well when they voted for Bush's war resolution??

I hope Clark writes a great book, sets up an institue for his 100 Year Vision, and steers clear of any VP slot or active campaigning ...unless he runs for Senate or Gov. against a Republican, and can stay true to his vision.

And if, perchance, a Kerry gets in, Clark doesn't need any Sec. of State or Defense position...Clark's done it all already, and he doesn't have to take orders from a Kerry, Edwards or whoever.

Clark has integrity and it is paramount that he retains that integrity.
"He knows who he is" and he knows what the others are....

He wasn't running just against Bush...he was running against all machine politics....

181. Cheers to you, Jim4Wes....
At least we can still meet here at DU after the Clark site goes down (horrible thought), although there is an alternative site or two going up soon! Will post URL's when they are up.....

I will vote for Wes one more time, as a write-in in November.....

The Democratic Party has screwed themselves by not learning a thing since the midterms in 2002. We had a window for a brief moment, but the machine blew it.....

179. Great post, Gloria!!
Even though Clark has nothing to prove, though, I'd still think it would be a waste of an emerging Democratic talent to not use his dedication to service. Clark would willingly serve if asked... and he'd make one helluva Secretary of State, or Defense, or UN Ambassador.

Let's not squander our talent. It's been the most amazing primary season, and I want us to exploit our abundant talent!!

:-)

Way to go, Clark Supporters. Your Heart and Dedication Gives Me Hope!!!!

183. Hey Clark Supporters -- His Campaign Made A Difference!
And so did YOU all. I admire and respect Gen. Clark enormously. I'm sure we have not seen the last of him.

I've experienced campaigning for a candidate who doesn't end up winning but let me tell you: you never know who has been inspired along the way of this campaign trail and what seeds have been sown.

Love to all.

Edited on Wed Feb-11-04 04:45 AM by CarolinaPeridot
and I am still happy today because of the way he has carried himself with dignity throughout the campaign . I had never been so happy the day that Wesley Clark announced that he was going to run for President - I was giddy with glee around the TV watching him during his speech . Hopefully he will continue with politics and keep on the fight for a better America . His words were right , his speeches powerful - I wish he would have gotten more media coverage sigh ... I am soooo sad that he is pulling out , I don't want to believe it but I guess it is so . Congrats to Wesley Clark and his family for everything they achieved .

:hugs:

189. Clark dropped out? Bloody hell, you guys have my sympathy.
Your support for him is (I won't say 'was') passionate and real, and I think it was obvious to everyone why he appealed to you.

The contest is poorer for his departure, and I wish he'd stayed.

have seen on political boards. I know I will be devastated if my candidate were to pull out. My sincerest condolences.

193. Condolences and Well-Done to Gen. Clark and his supporters
This is a very tough night and morning.

I personally feel that the race will be far less inspiring and engaging with Gen. Clark out of the race.

He did our party and nation a service by bringing up his issues, and I can only hope that he shall continue to speak out and work for these issues in the upcoming months.

AOnce again: All by best wishes and a hearty well-done to the General and his supporters here on DU.

He was a good candidate, and his presence will be missed.

a toast to General Wes Clark and all his supporters :toast:

thanks for running, and for focusing the campaign on the issues that are facing our Nation and not making this a race of personal politics.

Clark supporters, you folks are easily the classiest on DU and should be damn proud of your efforts. Your reasons for supporting Clark were genuine and noble. I applaud all that you accomplished and I'm exremely thankful for what your efforts allowed General Clark to bring to the race.

The General has served his country well, and I am sure he will continue to do so in some capacity. He held Bush's feet to the fire, and for that I will be eternally grateful to him.

197. I hope he stays active in Dem politics
I voted for him in Virginia yesterday and so did a couple of my coworkers, so I was very surprised he didn't do well here. The whole primary race seems sadder without him in it. I hope he stays involved in Dem politics somehow because he's a nice man, a smart leader, and he sure has class.
