A former hippie "liberal" who "saw the light" just called and had a
lengthy conversation with Rush. She stated he was far too easy with libs, that she used to belong to the "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" group, but then did a 180 degree turn after she had her children! She was born in a poor dysfunctional family, was angry at the world in general, and found "liberalism" an answer to her prayers. It was gawd-awful.... She then realized it was just not the right path for her, liberals are angry, selfish, self-loathing people and that this is a mental idealogue of negativism, pro-abortion and femnists,we just can't help it! I tried to call in to state I used to be a Republican conservative, but then realized that the hypocritic, warmongering, pocketbook priorities of this group was definitely not for me. I'm still trying but the line is too busy and Randi comes on in 25 minutes.

1. Liberalism is not a lifestyle.
We do not go out in the world and filter everything through liberalism glasses. I wish I could say the same for neocons and Fundies.

angry, selfish, and self-loathing in general (be she liberal or anything else). I don't trust people like this. They're searching for some sort of completeness from politics or religion or something external -- which they're never going to find. Kind of sad, really.

8. I was never a hippie
but I grew up in a single parent household. I saw what gender discrimination was up close and personal. I saw my black friends discriminated against. I saw the exploitation of workers by corporations. I've been a liberal since I was quite young and continue to be one today. I don't see what "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" have to do with liberalism.

21. I kinda wondered when she stated she was a former
hippie and then stated that she grew up very poor. Most hippies did not come from poor backgrounds. Those from poor backgrounds were still marrying right out of high school and starting families while fighting for a decent factory job or their men were being drafted.

I still say her story sounds awfully fishy.

39. That's very true
the hippies tended to come from well to do families--there were several that hung around the university I attended on scholarship. Don't recall any of my working class friends going the flower child route. They trained for jobs.

43. What other choice did your working class friends have?
Without a scholarship their only option was to fight for training for a decent job. Very few went the flower child route because of economics.

That's why I think her story is bs.

44. Yes
one of my best friends became an RN, though it was tough going for her. The other worked her way through college, becoming one of the first women optomitrists to graduate from her university. She was the first in her family to go to college. One of the boys became the manager of a grocery store, and another joined the military. Sadly, he died in a one vehicle wreck a week after returning from Viet Nam. You know, I don't think any of us tried drugs--in fact, I don't recall any cussing either. I hadn't even heard the F word until I was 18.

9. Fundy brainwashing in action!
The sap may have been a drunk and a doper who screwed around before she found Jebus, but the closest she ever came to being a liberal is when her preacher told her that all drunks, dopers and screwarounds HAVE to be liberals.

These preachers need to have their mouths washed out with soap for telling such hideous and dangerous lies. They are hurting this country as well as the anxious and desperate people who go to their churches.

13. Probably a poseur.
RW nuts are very capable of pretending to be what they're not, including former "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" liberals, especially if it gives them another opportunity to smear liberals.

Witness the numerous misleading statements, distortions, and outright lies in RW e-mail campaigns.

I would view the caller with a good deal of skepticism.

I heard a guy say the same thing but that he was now PRO Iraq war and loved the Conservative mantras.

I have heard this on Rush as well on a local show. I would guess the RNC website has talking points on this or something.

Oh and one more thing-this whole "liberals are angry frustrated people" business is part of the RW trying to portray itself as NOT being bunch of old foagies in suits. Rush has been championing this for years gee and the odds that a caller would just happen to chime in in agreement ...imagine.

18. Sounds like she was making the shit up
Sure, we all change when we get older. If we did drugs we quit, if we slept around we don't do it anymore, etc. But most of us don't change our fundamental beliefs and if she were truly a liberal it wouldn't have changed.

Maybe she doesn't have time to run to protests anymore or volunteer at a local Planned Parenthood but if she were a liberal before she wouldn't try to take away another woman's rights just because she'd had the chance to make a choice. And any woman who calls herself "antifeminism", as it sounds like she is doing, has major issues w/ self loathing.

As for being poor-I read somewhere years ago that most people who identify themselves as liberal were usually raised in a middle class background and had some form of higher education. When she pointed out she grew up poor it sounded like a wealthier person trying to make an example out of those less fortunate in our society.

Or maybe I'm reading too much into it and she's just a whiner w/ a major crush on an idiot.

In their simple world and in their simple minds, complexity is just not allowed. You can't be yourself in their world. Good thing it's still a free country and you don't have to register to vote their way...and people WILL be held accountable if there really is a God.

I may have not been old enough let alone around during that time ( I was born in '68!) but I know that thousands of kids during that time who saw what was going on in San Francisco and just played along with the scene because it was considered "cool" like any other trend that has come and gone. That era was no different. A lot of the kids at that time in the 60's went on to become right-wing yuppies in the 80's, 90's and so on. Am I right? Somebody confirm this for me.

Sex, drugs, and rockand roll, and from a poor, dysfunctional family----sounds like she grew up in a rural or suburban fundamentalist family. In my rural fundamentalist area meth labs seem to be a chief industry.

Why waste your time waiting to call in and countering this. Is Rush really going to put you on the air and listen? Remember that old Bible phrase: "Resist not evil."

Call Randi instead and let us hear your story.

28. The Liberal outlook on politics and on life is an
enlightened outlook on life. It is extremely rare for a person who is a true liberal to regress back into a stunted conservative or repug form of thinking. Usually, if this happens the person was never a liberal to begin with and they were just born into circumstances where they were told they were a liberal. Another reason for the rare regression back into conservatism is a mental disorder of some sort, this may be this caller's problem.

Although his solution to the problem of custody is the one and only thing I give him credit for. During/after the divorce he and the wife were trying to work out a custody schedule, when he (reportedly) came up with the idea that he and his ex-wife should be the ones to bear the inconvenience of the divorce. So the kids stay(ed) at the house all the time and he and she would alternate living there with them. I think it was a great idea, provided that you can afford it.

She lives there with the kids part of the year, then she moves out and he moves in, the kids stay there all the time. They were, as far as I know, the first couple to do this and it was about 20 years ago, so...

It was just so the kids didn't get shuffled back and forth. He's still an asshat, but I thought it was an good idea to put the burden on the divorcees, and keep the kids lives more stable.
