From Rep. Jack Murtha-tell * his new plan is not the will of the people!
Dear Ruth,

Unacceptable. A rapid escalation of troops is just simply unacceptable. About five months ago, we put more troops in Baghdad and unfortunately, attacks increased and a record number of Americans and Iraqis were killed. President Bush's "new strategy" just demonstrates his plans to once again ignore the will of the people, the advice of his commanders, the Baker-Hamilton commission, and even some in his own party.

On November 7, American voters delivered a powerful message to President Bush that they wanted a new direction in Iraq. As the nation watched President Bush's speech, it became clear that he chose to once again ignore their call for change.

I ask you today to stand with me as we tell President Bush that his plan to rapidly escalate this war sends the wrong message to Iraqi leaders, provides no credible benchmarks or ways to measure progress and worst of all ignores the will of the American people. Sign our petition to President Bush and tell him that you stand with the Democratic Leadership, and his plan is not the will of the people.

Democrats believe the President's change in tactics is too little, too late. We know from an AP-Ipsos poll that 70 percent of Americans oppose the President's new strategy of sending more troops, and a similar number don't think such an increase will improve the situation in Iraq. Support for going to war has also eroded to a mere 35 percent.

I know that our victories in 2006 will only be victories again in 2008 if the Democratic majority continues to demand a change in strategy from President Bush. I promise you that Democrats will fight until we are able to ask all the tough questions and get all the answers about his plan. But we need the President to know that you are behind us.

Democrats were elected into the majority on the promise to keep fighting for that change. In the days ahead, Congress will ask the hard questions and give the President's proposal the scrutiny our troops and the American people expect. We will not stop until President Bush provides answers to the questions we need.

You can have faith that this fight is far from over. House Democrats will not give up until we have the answers the American people deserve.

Sincerely,

Jack Murtha
Member of Congress, Pennsylvania's 12th District
