Clark said everything might have been different if they went to Iowa.

Someone told him they wish he went to Iowa. That's what he said.

I caught it on CSPAN.

1. He also said when asked if he would stay in
He paused, said umm..., we'll talk tomorrow. We'll see tomorrow.

I totally thought it was a good idea to skip Iowa at the time, but I don't think it was a good idea now. It might be different if he had not skipped it.

I wish he was doing better. Our country needs him but maybe we do not deserve him.

2. In hindsight
it would have made a world of difference if he'd gone to Iowa. I pray he stays in, you never know what might happen and it's still too soon to drop out.

Yes, our country needs him but maybe we don't deserve him.

I'm not giving up.

4. Maybe we don't deserve him as a President.
He's too good.

5. Part of what makes you a viable candidate
Edited on Tue Feb-10-04 10:47 PM by Nicholas_J
and a viable president has to do with making the right decisions when you are campaigning. Thats how you tell how well the person will perform as president. How often they will make the right choice and not talk about "if only". I like Clark, but this was bad planning from the start, and it takes good planning all of the time. Or as much of it as humanly possible.

7. That is utter hogwash.
Running a political campaign and running the country are two entirely different things.

3. Iowa was a big miscalculation
General Clark should have gone to Iowa. He had momentum in Iowa before going to NH. The race would have been very close. Clark may have gotten a lot of the late momentum that went to Kerry and Edwards. But, it is all water under the bridge. Regardless, General Clark is a great Democrat and it is a shame that any of the other candidate ever accused him of being a repuck.

6. In context it really did look like a Dean vs. Gephardt race
Getting bogged down in 3rd would not have helped. Only in retrospect can we know that Iowa changed everything.

8. Iowa was something of a shocker
even to this Kerry supporter. It's hard to fault Clark for his decision - he didn't have the time to get an organization together for Iowa. It seemed a good strategy, with favorite son Gephardt and Dean doing so well.

9. Iowa
He really would have had a good grass roots effort here. I was part of the draft Clark movement here and it was all a go until that fateful Saturday morning when we were abandoned without courtesy of a return call from Little Rock. He should have come in guns blazing and yet lowering expectations.
