How does Dean have more delegates than Edwards?...
I'm a political novice, but it seems to me that Dean has been getting his clock cleaned while Edwards has been holding his own.

That said, how does he have more delegates?

1. Superdelegates - unpledged
Dean leads Edwards in the unpledged superdelegates. There are 801 superdelegates, which are elected Democrats and DNC members. They can endorse any candidate and change their mind at any time. Pledged delegates are those elected during the primaries and must stay pledged to their candidate until after the first ballot at the convention. Here is the count breakdown

Kerry Dean Edwards Clark
Unpledged 102 96 26 34
Pledged 397 86 131 57
Total 499 182 157 91

4. Only the pledged delegates can be counted at this stage.
Only birds in the hand. And that puts Edwards solidly in second place.

2. Dean has more delegates--
Remember how he accumulated so very many endorsemnets. He had more Congressional Supporters than any other candidate. Party Leaders are also "Super Delegates along with Congress members(House and Senate). His Super Delegate counts put him in the lead. Hope this helps.

3. Dean did well on the weekend and also did well in NH
He got delegates there and Edwards got none. Also the super delegates are a factor.

6. And he will lose all of them
Edited on Tue Feb-10-04 10:50 PM by Nicholas_J
Before the convention. Thats the way it works. In the last week, the unpledged candidates in all cases are sat down with by the party leadership and they are rather firmly told to turn their support over to the candidate with in the lead. Or the next time they go looking to run for office, the party decides it wants to put someone else up. Thats politics.

no he will do as he pleases with them
He can give his delegates to another if he wants to.

Your comments are un-necessary. It almost seems like you are still fearful of Dean. Thanks for the freudian slip. :toast:

5. Dean got STRONG second places in each caucus over the weekend
Edwards didn't get any delegates from those races.

Plus Dean has a bunch of superdelegates.

Dean's doing well in the northern/western states, and Edwards is doing well in the south.

10. Because he's come in second in virtually every primary/caucus.
He's gotten delegates in most states, often many of them. Just because the media is trying to keep you from hearing about this doesn't mean it's not happening.
