Edwards rails against troop increase for Iraq

Iowa City, Ia.--More than 500 people crammed into the University of Iowa Memorial Union to hear Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards cover issues that ranged from the war in Iraq to the need for more affordable health care.
Many said they came Saturday to gather information about the former North Carolina senator's agenda, rather than campaign on his behalf.
"I want to find out more information about what he is planning on doing," said Nick Johnston of Iowa City.
But several people at the rally were decked out in campaign shirts to show their support for the one-time vice-presidential candidate.
Edwards criticized President Bush's decision to send more troops to Iraq.
He said Iowans should persuade their leaders in Congress to vote against money for the plan.
"I am impressed with what he had to say about the war," said Robin Butler of Iowa City. "Obviously, he was very passionate about it."

But Edwards fan Ellis Hawley said "he will do well against Clinton and Obama. Midwestern attitudes, I guess, is what it comes down to."
Iowa City resident Todd Foldesi said he showed up Saturday to get a better idea of where Edwards stands. He thinks it will take some bold stances to stand out in the growing field of Democratic candidates.
"If he can say something that is unique, at least early on, he can establish himself," Foldesi said.
