1. Clark, if he runs
Gore, if he runs

Not too impressed with those who've committed, but I'm looking at Richardson.

Despite his qualifications. Check this out from a liberal Virginia blog.

69. so unproven scuttlebut is valid
as a criterion for choosing a POTUS?

So I set up a blog saying Kucinich winked at a flight attendant and he's out for you?

I get some detail-less fourth hand rumor that Clark told a rude joke demeaning women in the officer's mess and he's gone?

Give m testimony under oath from multiple sources and corroborating evidence THEN I will take this under consideration. Until then rumor makes me change my mind about nobody.

I wouldn't even use such flimsy gossip as an argument against Bush let alone a capable and qualified Dem.

74. This MUST be researched thoroughly.
If there's ANY truth in this, Richardson needs to bow out.

The Republicans know what to do with indiscretion, and I do not want a president who will be distracted by Republican nuttiness.

IMHO, Clinton would have done much more in his second term if the Pubbies hadn't gone nuts. I can only imagine how much time and energy Clinton and his staff expended on countering his enemies rather than doing good for us all.

I'm still holding out hope for him. I like Wesley Clark too. I like Obama as well. And as for Hillary, well, let's just say if she winds up being the nominee, I WILL INDEED work for her and vote for her. I wish Kucinich had a realistic chance, and my heart will ALWAYS belong to Howard Dean. But he may be better situated, strategically, as head of our party, steering us along the "50-State Strategy" course that made us competitive in SO many more places last November. Obama, btw was, once upon a time, one of his early "Dean Dozen" choices, when Obama was running for the Senate early-on. So he may be a great kingmaker. And we need one.

For me, it's GORE first. Then the others. Besides, Gore's OWED.

22. The thing is
Right now global warming is rapidly becoming (or is) the biggest issue of our time, as Pelosi said. It destroyed massive amounts of crops this year, and could potentially soon pose a substantial threat global food supplies. Gore put politics aside and identified this issue long before all else, which frames him to meas a brilliant leader who puts politics aside to do the right thing. Welfare is secondary to me with things of this magnitude on the table.

57. I support the candidate that most closely reflects my own positions.
I don't tailor my core values to some candidate simply because they MIGHT have a better chance at WINNING. In my opinion to choose a candidate based on some perceived "electability" is one of the systemic problems with American politics. I look at what the candidates stand for, what their ideas are and what their values are. I then choose the candidate that most closely aligns with me. I will wait and decide how to vote in Nov. '08 when I see who the nominee is...

76. I understand that. As you can see from my avatar, I'm much the same way.
I merely mention it as a valid point which is relevant to your post. To be honest, I'm no fan of DK (and I'm a Buckeye). Many of the Democratic Ohioans that I have talked to don't care for his politics either. In fact, in 2004, he only garnered 9% of Ohio's primary vote: http://www.infoplease.com/spot/campaign2004primaries1.html

Looking at the results of the 2004 primaries, that 9% was actually higher than what he received in most of the other state primaries. The avergae looks to be closer to 5% based on the available data. In summary, Dennis Kucinich's chances of being elected as President of the US are basically nil. Sorry.

either will do, both would be better (as a ticket)

On edit - I would not have a prblem with Gore/Richardson (VP), and Clark as Defense Secretary. Maybe that would be an even better idea.

Could you imagine if Gore were to announce, and announce his partial cabinet and VP choice in advance?

58. As VP, he had to do Clinton's bidding. The Al Gore I have been seeing
lately is so different from the man who ran in 2000. Read his Moveon speeches -- he is finally comfortable in his own skin -- and has re-discovered his core beliefs. Is he perfect from a progressive point of view - no. But he gets the big picture better than anyone else running.

91. Personally I have pledged that I will not vote for anyone who doesn't have
the courage and moral fortitude to call for the end of the Iraq war and to bring our troops home. ( a postion that the Nation magazine also takes.) Her position so far is just too hawkish for me -- and then the news the other day that she wants to be seen as America's Thatcher really put me off.

BTW, do you have a link for your claim that Gore still supports NAFTA as drafted -- I thought I read somewhere that he wants it revised to insert more environmental and labor safeguards.

40. It's gotta be Gore !!
Edited on Tue Jan-23-07 06:18 AM by Apollo11
I see everything that is going on right now as creating a "Perfect Storm" for Al Gore.

Hillary has been forced to show her hand a full 12 months before the start of the primaries!!

This means people have a full 12 months to ask Hillary about her position on Iraq, and why has she been so supportive of the illegitimate (p)Resident of the Whitehouse these past 5 years ....

People also have time to get tired of Hillary's campaign. What we might call "Hillary fatigue".

The field is getting very crowded and it will be tough for candidates to gain traction.

I like and respect both Obama and (especially) Edwards. But the fact is they are both relatively inexperienced and unqualified if you compare them to Al Gore. Obama has been 2 years in the Senate and Edwards was 6 years (but the last 2 of those he was concentrating on the 2004 campaign).

I respect the fact that Edwards has come clean about the situation in Iraq, and has admitted he was wrong to vote for the IWR. But I respect much MORE the fact that Gore spoke out agains the Bu$h-Cheney-Rumsfeld policy on Iraq from the beginning - in speeches going back to 2002 - insisting on giving the UN inspectors more time to carry out their mission and maintaining a broad international consensus.

There is no hurry for Gore to enter the race for 2008. He is doing a great job raising public awareness about the climate crisis (he spoke to 10 000 people in Boise on Monday!). He is also busy working on his next book "The Assault on Reason" - to be published in May*.

Depending on how things pan out, and the reaction to his forthcoming book, Gore can consider his situation over the summer and announce his decision sometime in the fall. Don't forget that Bill Clinton did not start his campaign until October 1991 - 12 weeks before the start of the '92 primaries. But Al Gore already has nationwide respect and name recognition that other wannabees can only wish for!

And by the way - Gore is younger than Hillary, Clark, Kerry, McCain and Giuliani! :)

Unless and until Gore endorses another candidate, we have to assume that he is keeping his options open. So it is too soon for those of us who prefer Gore to switch our allegiance.

* see http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/16/AR2006091600877.html

Let's all find ways to show our support for Al Gore!

In Gore We Trust

64. What this tells me is that the left or netroots have not...
...really selected a candidate to get behind and use their numbers and organization to push for, like Dean in 2004. Edwards has some early momentum, but not much. Obama likewise. Hillary just seems dead-in-the-water to me. Her numbers always stay at around 10% no matter how you ask the question. And she even announced her candidacy this week.

That tells me that there may be some room for us netrooters to really get one of our own in there as the nominee. I know it's way too early to even hint at desperation. But this is something that we netrooters have to do eventually this year: select one candidate, preferably one with a real chance of winning and back him/her to the very end. I think this candidate can garner up to a 10 to 15% bump just from the consolidation of support alone.

Second, when Hillary's numbers continue to fall --- which mark my words is inevitable, if only for one reason her strongest support comes from African Americans and there is a credible African American in the race which will divide that vote and cost her about 7 to 10% overall (the better known Obama becomes, and the more he consolidates his African American support the lower Hillary's numbers will fall, probably settling at 20% or so nationally) --- then we'll have our own candidate well positioned and financed to bring the race "home" when it matters.

Just something to consider.

65. Kerry, Gore, Clark in order of preference ----I may add Obama to replace one
of the above if they don't run, but I don't quite feel like I know enough about him yet.

98. New list now: Gore, Clark and Obama in order of preference. Since
Kerry is not running. I would have voted for Obama if I was going strictly by the poll.

78. Kucinich garnered, on average 5% of the 2004 statewide primary votes in the 2004 election cycle.
In his home state of Ohio he only garnered 9% of the primary votes coming in third ahead of Dean with 4%. He has loser written all over him I'm afraid.

It is inaccurate/fantasy land without him in the running. The time to take this poll is after he decides one way or the other.
