Al Zawahiri was being touted as having been killed. Due to tomorrow night's SOTUS by *, isn't it convenient that the terrorist johnny jump ups always appear just before a major election, speech, etc. ?

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was a Jordanian Salafiist mujahid who led a murderous campaign in Iraq in 2005 and early 2006 before his death.

Ayman al-Zawahiri is an Egyptian Wahabbiist author and fundraiser who left the Muslim Brotherhood to go fight with bin Laden in Afghanistan.

al-Zawahiri and al-Zarqawi hated each other, and each thought the other one was making the wrong decision on the direction for the Iraqi war. Bin Laden came down on al-Zawahiri's side and, not very long after, Zarqawi's location was conveniently relayed to the US, at which point he became several million discrete atoms.

Zarqawi was never "the number 2 al Qaeda man" and OBL and the "official" AQ brand always kept an arm's length from him and his tactics. (One of the more revealing letters we intercepted was Zawahiri's warning to Zarqawi that the Arab world would not stand for the grisly beheadings he kept doing). Zawahiri has always been the number 2 man of al Qaeda (in fact some have compared his relationship to bin Laden with Cheney's relationship with *), and in fact Zawahiri was in the hotel room where they first talked about setting up a "base" (a "qaeda") for training mujahidiin in Afghanistan (they never called their thing "al Qaeda" until we developed that brand for it, it was more of an unspoken cosa nostra sort of thing).
